Fellow bus nut returning from the caverns last night had his engine quit in Gallup N.M. Due to sheared gears driving the power steering and the alternator, He is at a shop having the front of the engine removed ( at this writing they are pulling the tranny ). He does not feel it looks good.He does not have axcess to the net, so I am trying to help out buy asking anyone that can recomend or have a rebuilt 871 they want to sell within several hundered miles of gallup, ( they are 120miles from Albquerque N.M.) Thanks John |

Here’s an update. I’ll post to this board because now when I pull up the MAK board, the first 20% of all the posts are complete gibberish. I’ve called the junkyards, but only found 8v71s, in retired 1980 Grumman buses, with superchargers and turbo, for $3500 in Albuquerque. These buses were city transits and have been parked for several years, but the owner said they simply add fresh batteries and they start right up. He will run one up for me to observe, then pull it and load it onto my vehicle. No one else would sell just engines, but some had running trucks with 8v71s for $8,000 and higher. I’m not familiar with the Grumman or GMC, so someone else needs to help determine if they are a good match for an engine swap, and what other parts may need changing. I called a expert bus guy in Valle, AZ, about 210 miles from Gallup, 60 miles past Flagstaff. He rebuilt 8v71s for 10 years. All his buses are more modern, and he only has an 8v71 block and some assorted parts now. He can get a rebuilt 8v71, dyno tested, with warranty, out of CA for $7500. Stewart & Stevenson, the official Detroit dealer in Alb., can solve the problem, but I’ll bet the bill exceeds $10,000. I have no idea if these prices are cheap, fair, or outrageous, someone else care to comment? I can start cruising the sales lots for running vehicles, it may be cheaper to buy an entire vehicle than just the engine. Let me know. I recall an RTS for sale a few months ago. Steve Posted previously... I'm in Albuquerque, the closest large city to him. I'll start calling all the junkyards right now to see what's available here for takeouts. Keep us updated on the progress and what is needed for parts, etc. Got a junkyard here with about 20 intact New Looks and RTSs straight from city service, but they haven’t run in a few years. Does he need a running takeout, or can the engine be from a vehicle that hasn’t run in several years? Question for busnuts - what does an 8v71 weigh? This will determine what type vehicle/trailer is needed to haul it. My email is duesenburg99 at aol dot com Steve 80 Crown Atomic |

Don't forget, John Marbury runs the Country Kitchen Cafe or some close to that name in Gallup, has a 4905 and probably has a handle on things there, maybe even a spare engine!~ |

John and Desta run the fine establishment of the Ranch Kitchen at exit 16 in Gallup. Dick and Mary have been in contact with John and he is aware of their situation. John has a RH 8V71 engine in a MC5, but it has been sold to someone else and is not a parts bus. Is it possible to repair the busted shaft or do they need a whole new engine? Maybe Luke has a shaft on hand that could be shipped? I followed their tow truck in and they are at a shop somewhere near exit 26 (east side of town)in Gallup. As a side note: I stopped again on the roadside to offer assitance to a Prevo east of Gallup who had blown a turbo. He was waiting on a truck to take him to ABQ. Hope he made it ok too. Might have even been the same wrecker he was waiting for. Not a good night for busnuts it seems. Scott |

Thank you john for speaking to Bill. I dont know a lot about engines or prices for repairs. But I understand they are taking the rear ( next to the tranny ) bell housing off , cause several gears are stripped on that end of the motor. From the shop and people I talk to, it could of messed up the timing and lots off other gears. Maybe the valves?? The estimate is $4000 to repair maybe?? or $$4000 to $5000( not including the engine) to change out the engine for a diffrent engine. If there is a good chance of the valves being bad, should they not first remove the valve covers and inspect? Or can you not tell by doing this?? Does anyone know? Whatever the problem, I would not be satisfied until I new why it happend, before It was put back together. Tell Richard we are all pulling for him. John |

Talked several times to Richard today. It appears that the blower got caught up either inhailed something and or the shaft started to move and work loose. This tansferd down the shaft to the blower cogg which lost two teeth which transferd to the cogg above it that also lost 3 teeth, which in tern transferd up to the large cogg that lost half of its teeth. So eventhough all these teeth probably ended up in the oil pan what other damage did they do while getting to the pan. Also this must mean the timing went out so what damage did that do? I have also spoken to Bill Teal several times today.Great guy,he has offer to help with anything Richard needs. John |

John I'm glad Bill Teal was able to help you. I have never met him but have talked to him and bought stuff from him. He seems like a great fellow busnut and willing to do anything he can for someone else. Good luck on your engine. Bill |

This is just an opinon from one who broke a crank in a 4106 on the road. $10K later I had a rebuilt 8V71 back in. With 20/20 hindsight I always wished I had put in a 6V92T. Just feel it would have been money better spent. |

Richard has been looking at lots of options, and is going to have the coach transported to Farminton. N.M. Where Marvin a guy who is very experienced with 71 series engines ( recomended by Jim Ferry ) will replace the engine. He will be using Bill Teals 871T.The work should start this week. Richard very much appreciates everyones input and help. Its tuff only owning a bus for a few months and having this happen, his family realises what a heck of a bus nut family they have now. John |
