I have a stainless steel RV unit. It is four burner with oven. It is looking a bit old and tired though. Don't know if it could be polished up to give it a new shine. The burner cover is beige. Free to anyone who wants to pick up in the Tulsa, OK area. It is a heavy bugger. Also FREE is an electric toaster oven. Scott |

We just bought a 20 inch Avanti 4 burner stainless steel gas range with oven to replace our RV stove. Got it at Walmart.com, better price than any dealer in Florida or south Georgia could offer us. |

My RV is a '78 and it has the stainless steel stove/oven. I found the stainless steel did not hold up well over the years and discolored as well as gaining rust spots when it sat in storage. Perhaps I should have maintained the mentality that nothing lasts forever but I had assumed stainless would not discolor, a wrong assumption. The bus has a Enamaled paint surface and looks great. perhaps this finish will look better longer, "who would have thought". I know this goes against the normal thought of Stainless Steel being IMPERVIOUS to marks and such, but not the case with mine. "Imagine" CD |

Like CoryDane I had always believed that stainless steel meant it wouldn't stain or rust, but it seems there are differing grades. The best of it, is just as advertised, but certain grades of stainless will actually rust! Brian |

300 (3XX) series stainless resists some types of corrosion. It has a high amount of nickel. It's generally softer and not used for knives, propellers, surgical instruments, automotive trim, etc. I suspect the stanless used for trim on older buses was 300 series, but I know on my '81, the trim must be a 400 series because there are places that have been scratched and rusted. 400 (4XX) series is used for many stampings. At my company we produce stainless steel fenders for trailers. Actually it's the same material as used for automotive trim, just wider rolls to blank the parts from. If you scratch it, it rusts. If you've ever had a stainless steel propeller on a marine engine, it rusts, but easlily comes off. I suspect the oven/stove that cd mentioned was made from 400 series. BTW, 400 series is lower cost than 300, and that's why I think it's more common today than when the older "Silversides" were produced. There are many other grades of stainless and even within the above grades there are many alloys that are produced for certain characteristics. |

I've found the best way to keep stainless looking new is (ready for this?) Pine-Sol mixed with warm water (strength ~10-1, depending on how dirty it is). Spray it on (I use an old Windex bottle), wipe it with a damp towel. My mother taught me this one, & she has stainless stuff that is 25+ years old & looks brand new. |

Hamilton Marine in Maine has a number of gas drop ins in Marine SS in the $300 price range. t They have a really usefull catalog and 800 number, and are priced 25% or more below West marine. Also a good source for unpowered diesel heaters or SS ranges in the 20,000 BTU size. However West does have a great catalog with explanations on many things , just not the best prices. FAST FRED |

If I forsee needing to buy a lot from West Marine I usually take a temporary job there on truck unloading night so I can get the employee discount. Very worthwhile. As for keeping stainless clean and looking good I always had good luck witha product called Sheila shine |

Late 50's, early 60's military cooks used tabasco sauce to clean/shine stainless steel. You choice of weapons. :-# Dale MC8 |

"If I forsee needing to buy a lot from West Marine " It would pay you dividends to get the caralogue from Hamilton Marine in Maine , And Defender industries in CT, both have 800 numbers and both are 25 to 40% below West. FAST FRED |

Thanks Fred. Actually my boat is insured through defender, good rates. When we were overhauling the boat to be a live-aboard we were about 1/2 mile from west so it worked out really well. Employees get cost +10% which is roughly 40% off depending on the product |
