Shy of using the 6-71 stock T setup off a truck or similar coach... I received a recommendation on using a TV61 turbo (which appears to be a CAT turbo) for doing a conversion on the 6-71. It appears that on the 'top end' running ~2200-2300RPM...it's pushing 30-31lbs/min air at the boost levels I'm thinking of. I'm aware of timing/piston/blower changes (been reading the ARCHIVES all day :-) Mostly looking for any words of wisdom on suitable turbo models for the 6-71's 426cu inches of mass. I am familiar with running turbo maps on 4-stroke diesels (hot rodding Mercedes turbo diesels) but wonder what a suitable exhaust side would be? TO4 big enough with a medium size compressor? My old 3.0L Benz motor at 5500RPM and 28lbs boost is using more air than I plan on needing for the 6-71 at 12psi...but I don't want to choke off the exhaust with high back pressure. Any thoughts/opinions on reasonable turbochargers? Not going to repower with a V motor either :-) I was sold on inline motors long ago. Thanks! P.S. When our 6-71 was turboed on our 4104, they mounted the turbo right on the exhaust manifold; bolted right to the flange. Made the rest of the plumbing fairly easy. Bigger air filter unit, 4 inch exhaust with compact muffler. Turbo out to intake came directly up over engine at bell hsg end of valve cover. Made a small notch in corner of bulkhead for clearance. Still could remove valve cover for service. Pipe bolted to top of blower inlet.Emergency shutdown was retainer. Turbo piston kits, turbo exhaust valves and springs,some other changes. Ran like having an NA 8-71. Overall, the best way would be to find a used 6-71 TA. Much cheaper in long run, and already have the correct components. Course you could just bolt on the turbo and see how it works. You have a 2 valve head,low block,HV-7 injectors now ? |

Here shortly, I will have a 4-valve with N65 injectors & jake brakes (all rebuilt to turbo specs.) The block is a high block. I have access to the turbo manifold and mostly am curious what turbocharger to choose. There should be adequate real estate to mount a medium sized after-cooler between turbo and blower. I have a GT40VNT, but that level of technology is a little over the top of the mechanical 6-71 :-) Has a variable AR from .6-1.08 I believe? Any thoughts on a suitable turbo? Anyone know anything about this TV61? -Brandon |

I'd just go with what DD used on a 6-71 TA. Glad to hear you have a suitable engine. Unless someone has actually used those on a 6-71, It is going to be a crap shoot. Maybe Don Fairchild will weigh in |

If you build your 6-71 to full turbo specs, including valve timing, use an air to air intercooler mounted in the transmission door, your 6-71 with 80 injectors will put out 300hp and 900lb/ft torque-more then a 8V-71 natural. Hopefully your transmission will take it-just don't floor it in 1st or 2nd. Good Luck, TomC |

The turbo you want is either a tV7502 with either a .96 or 1.08 hot housing if you stay with a 70 or smaller injector or the TV 7511 with a .96 HH at a 7G75 or bugger I can give you part numbers if you want them. Give the model and serial # from the GT40 I may want it. Don 8884733626 |

Hey guys, I'm seeing some locally available turbos model: T18A40 Apparently off an 8v71? Thoughts? the A/R seems about right. Don, The GT40VNT is actually the turbo I purchased a few years ago for my 5-cylinder turbo diesel project (Mercedes 3.0L). The variable vans allow it to range from below a stock exhaust side trim up to a very nice high trim to prevent backpressure. Bought it for super cheap, so will probably hang onto it. I think the exhaust side is way too restrictive for 2-cycle diesel use. Thanks for the model numbers. Seeing what I can find! Also...my dad passed on some information about using a bypass blower housing on the blower so that it would allow the boost around the blower and not wipe out the bearings/etc. Finding this end housing may be a bit tricky...however I don't see why a standard one-way bypass valve (or valve with pressure signal) couldn't be used? Brandon, Your air flow will depend on your hp but a 6-71T @275hp2100 rpm will flow 2550 cfm exhaust and 1100 cfm intake. Don't forget to up size the air filter. Useing a vblower end plast with by pass is not hard to do I have done it on some of my 4-71T's I build. I would look into useing a regular 6-71TA bypass blower and a charge air cooler as has been suggested. You could probably use the GT 40 with either a air throttle and regulator or and electric throttle possition sensor to control the VNT. I am working on a set up like that for a 4-71TI MUI I want to take to testing for the tier III marine/ offroad standards. On the GT40 that is a big frame turbo and will support 400hp to 850HP, 2L to 6L gas engine. I would think you would want a medium frame turbo GT 25-35 series. for your gas engine depending use.
