I am planning to install a rear cap on my GMC 4107. Has anyone done this themselves? How did you maneuver it into place? Do you have any photos of the installation? Any sage advice/words of wisdom would be appreciated.

I put mine on myself on a 4905, and learned a few things. It is easy to lift up into position.
I screwed on a couple brackets to the bus for the rear bottom to rest on, which held it level during final positioning. The next is to get it even from side to side, as it tends to fit even far off center. I finally measured from each corner to find the center of the cap, then measured to find the center of the bus, and aligned the two marks.
The shapes involved means then for a good fit, to "push" it onto the bus. I used a canvas strap hooked from rear window to rear window, and cinched it up as tight as I could. When you get to that point, start measuring for rivets, and putting them in (Assuming you have put the lap and gutter sealant on the mating surfaces of course.)
All this sounds much more complicated and complex than it really is, only takes a short time to accomplish, and you will be glad you did it yourself.

Thanks Don. Easy to lift into place? I hate to be a doubting Thomas but, it's 150 lbs, 8' wide and 5' high.

use clecos for holding it in place , 'till you get all the holes drilled... remove clecos, then rivet...

John is like I am I think :>) Until you have seen it done or have some pictures of how it is done it is hard to understand how to do it. After you have done it then it seems easy to do. That being said, I looked up Clecos and found a supply of them and pictures but I have no idea how they work or how to use them :>) Not dumb, I have watched many crafts people do their work and then gone home and did it myself by myself. So John is not off base in asking for anybody who has pictures of what they did or how they did it since I also need the same information. Thanks to anybody who will supply that information ok? And if you don't want to reply here just send me an email with the pictures please.

hard to explain a cleco... its used as a "temporary holding/alignment device".... you drill a hole in 2 (or more) pieces of metal.... and a spring loaded cleco will hold it together....temporarily.....you have to use the special "pliers" to install them...they are 'sized' to the hole that is drilled... 1/8 hole gets 1/8 cleco.. etc....so if you want to rivet 2 pieces of metal together, drill a hole, insert a cleco, drill another hole, insert anothe cleco... etc, 'till you got it all set ... then remove the clecos 1 at a time, install rivets... want 1 to look at??? send me your snail mail address.. i'll stick 1 in the mail.... jimcat2@webtv.net

I had cleco's in the box, but did not feel the need fo them. Once you pull that cap up against the bus with the racheted canvas strap come-a-longs that baby is NOT going to move around like an airplane part, it will stay right where it is strapped.

Thanks Don, et al. I'm fairly certain I can do this, I just like to get as much experienced input as possible. Which, I believe, is what this BBS is all about. So, thanks again and I wil try to remember to take photos of my installation. Perhaps it will help the next guy.

John:
The clecos that I perfer are the ones that have
the wing nuts on top. No tool needed. They work
great. Could not have put my caps and siding on
without them.

Sorry I did not respond Yesterday, was busy and did not log in on the computer. I have only pictures after I finish a project on each stage
of construction, but not as work is going on.
I would be happy to explain and help you in any
way I can. Check your e-mail for my number.

I have a cap on my 4106 and wish it was gone. It was installed by previous owner about three years ago. Must have been stressed or something cause now its cracked on both sides. So I wouldn't put one on if the back is working as is! I'm taking it off first op. I just wish I knew what was under it so I could get ready. Any one have pictures of whats under my cap?

They probably put a cap on it to replace an expensive broken rear window.

Although some folks would rather look back and see there stored old clothes than the view most go traveling to see.

Or like me, I busted the glass out to save weight and gain room. When I try to look at the scenery out the rear of a 40 foot bus, I tend to run right off the road! The windshield seems to work much better for rubbernecking.
