It looks like the bus passengers have to balance the ferry or at least they are all on one side, interesting. Years ago, before the Mackinac bridge was built between the upper penninsula and the lower penninsula here in michigan, we would cross on car ferrys, it would sometimes involve a wait of a couple of hours depending on the weather and traffic, we always thought it was such a big deal to be allowed to watch the water from the railing as we crossed, that was back in the 50's, seems like a lifetime ago, just last week a truck driver had a heart attack while crossing the bridge, crossed the median and took out a car on the oncoming lanes, he died but they survived ok, they said he had a heart attack. |

That's what I thought too. Counter weights. I've ridden a few ferries around the PacNW, but I've never seen a bus on one before. I found this photo a long time ago and it's always been one of my favorites. We found a bridge in Old Town Sacramento Ca. that was built before my bus was and as luck would have it, about half way across the bridge someone decided the couldn't wait for us to make it to the other side before they crossed. I messed up the rubber on the curb side tires and I was still over the center line, but I missed him. I was a little surprised to say the least. They should have posted a sign or two. We have a bridge here that crosses the Columbia River and there is at least one head on a year. Once in awhile they even make it into the water. |

In western tennessee and kentucky there are a few older bridges that cross the ohio river and the mississippi that are quite narrow, you can see where there are marks on the side girders about mirror height and at night the sparkles from the mirror glass on the road is really pretty, I've always enjoyed the ride to bk's place (Busted Knuckle) in Union city, I haven't been to his new place yet. |

never seen an 04 on a raft before! How about the old wood suspension bridges in eastern Ky? The ones i drove on were near Pikeville and my friends said to drive fast.If you drove slow (like any sane person) they would start swaying.Never saw anything bigger than a 3/4 ton p/u on them but i was 18 and not as observant then haha. i recall them being 4x4 planks with a cable (3/4?) coming down and thru the ends with a one inch gap between each board and maybe 8' wide. one was 75 to 100 yards across. 1977 just after the big flood. But i cannot imagine why they would not put the bus in the center of the ferry. Maybe its an optical illusion. |

It looks to me like the bus is as far to the right as possible. There wouldn't be much room to get out if it was in the middle. Possibly riding in the bus is not wise if the ferry sinks. |

I saw that ferry on my way to BK'S two years ago. It was in Kentucky on some back road that I was own. I had to turn around and back track about 35 miles. No way was I putting HUGGY on that ferry. It might of held a big pickup truck. My shortcut was not a short cut but a nice drive through the country side. uncle ned |

Ed, I swear I saw that bus pass through Astoria this summer. And a couple other skoolies that looked just like it. All seemed to be filled with free spirited musicians. Not judging. |

Those guys with Marathon coaches.... they are the one with the "Expensive Spirits" I would guess, right..? . . . I have to admit my taste in Spirits leans towards Royal Salute & Chivas..... "Free Spirits" (actually Cheap) like Thunderbird gives me a headache and Annie Green Springs makes me feel like Chromie & talk like Dal. . . I'm not Judging either....just sayin... |

The Hippy buses of the 60s,I remember them! Man I thought that was a cool way to travel, one big rolling party and always more girls than guys(all the guys were in Viet Nam in 1968 in my small southern town)and a bus would drift through and park down by the river and some of teenagers ,myself included as I spent all my teenage years in the 60s would stop by and party all night, man what a time! I think I may have the answer to why I like buses! |

Paul, that is cool, I could see myself banging my head on the overhang at the A&W tho, pulling in for a burger, I couldn't imagine how many hours would be tied up in making that bus from scratch, not to mention what it all would cost but looks definently like a labor of love. |

If you want to see classic 70's bus interiors ask Fred for a vintage photo of the interior of his VL when it was first converted |

I can't imagine how many hours of dedicated work it would take to make that bus, I'm redoing one of my older revcons and that is enough to keep me more busy than I intended. |
