I apologise if this is a FAQ but I can't find it discussed in the archives.

We have a new-to-us 1981 Prevost LeMirage conversion. While fixing the damage I did to the retractable antenna on the way home from picking it up, I noticed that there is some kind of rubber-like coating on the roof seams. That coating appears to be due to be redone. What do you use for that? What is on there now looks like rubber or even contact cement - it's a really thin coating and it rolls up in little balls if you rub it with your finger. Obviously it has to come off before I put anything else down but I don't know what to put down as a replacement.

you have a sprayed on roof coating that was sprayed onto a dirty/unprepared surface..it has to come off...the reason it was put on(aftermarket) the fellow noticed some leaks..guess I'd try a scraper..get it off...wash & rough up the surface with 100 grit sandpaper & have it re-applied

What is the coating though? I'm well aware it needs to be redone but my question is what to use.

call a R.V. dealer & ask him how much to have a rubber coating sprayed on your roof...it ain't real cheap...I re-read your post..sorry...looks like the owner got up there with something like silacone & brushed some on..

If roof is white I would use 3-M 5200 or 4200 in marine section of wally world. My best guess it is clear silacone, cause it rolls when rubbed, been there and would still use same type sealer, it takes expansion/ contraction best of all. Did some of my mc-8 seams with 5200, wish I had it on motor home. Silacone and butal sealents will roll when rubbed!

It's so thin that it must have been painted on. There is no way it came out of a caulking gun. It looks like one brush width of something. I suppose I could run a bead down it and then brush it out.

Is it normal for these seams to be coated with something?

If it is silicone, which I doubt since you say it was brushed on, you have problems. Stuff should be outlawed for external use. Even after u rub it off, you still have the residue of it to which nothing will stick. Maybe what u have is something like Kool-seal or the other rubberized latex coating stuff. If so, it will clean off with Acetone or Lacquer thinner. As a replacement sealer for the seam, I would use Urethane sealant or butyl rubber, but never silicone. Forget the rubber roof; I've yet to see one last and u will never find the guy that put it on to back up the warranty; he went out of business shortly after he does yours from all the preveious customers breathing down his neck.

If it balls up it is not a silicone or an elastomeric. silicone would pull up in strips..elastomeric would come up in sheets..take a sample to a roof center to see what it is. then make your decission on what to do.
if it balls up...youll have to preasure wash the roof and then do what you went. An Elastomeric roof coating ( white ) is 95% reflective in the first 2 or 3 years...to being it up later all you have to do is preasure wash it to get the dirt off.
look up Elastomeric roof coating on the web. it is flexible and has a 600% elongation to for a bus..its the only way to go
im a roofer and this is what i do on commercial steel buildings that flex...along with my own bus
