Yeah, we live at the end of it (after a short ferry ride of 80 miles). But, it's nearly 500 miles before we can turn south to head for Washington when we're trying to get out. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher Ketchikan, Alaska |

Jim, I consider a Florida Cracker a Florida born native, not a low class southern white. Many of my Florida born friends feel the same way. The term comes from the first yankees that saw the early Florida cowmen popping their whips when herding the wild cows that roamed down here. My friends have been here for generations, many are still ranching on the property homesteaded by their families. They are proud of their heritage. Jack |

Not to be confused with "Florida Croaker", that is someone who moves down from Michigan to become a porch raisin and die in St Pete. |

Brian, Here, many years ago we had Enco who used the same slogan. That eventually turned into Exxon during the Richard Nixxon years.... You remember Richard Nixxon.... "Nixxon, The names been changed but the Dicks the same"? and "Vote for Nixxon in '72 cause you can't change Dicks in the middle of a screw"! |

It's nice to see that Pete's PC has a Google Button & that he knows how to use it. Being the 1st to supply the correct answer gets you ANOTHER cold adults beverage from my cooler, when we are in close proximity next.. i think that's 2 I owe you & 1 you owe me.... and after 1 you can pretty much roll me for my valuables so I think you have the advantage here! |

No insult intended Jack. When I was young our family was in a group setting and the leader of the group asked how many Florida crackers are here. Some raised their hands and then he asked how many Georgia crackers are here, and some others raised their hands. My parents were not so sure what the meaning of crackers was so when we arrived home the dictionary provided the answer - see below. Jim G. - Ohio According to the 1911 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, "cracker" is a term of contempt for the "poor" or "mean whites," particularly of Georgia and Florida. Britannica notes that the term dates back to the American Revolution, and is derived from the "cracked corn" which formed their staple food. (Note that in British English "mean" is a term for poverty, not malice.) |
