what keeps my generator from back feeding power to my cord when i am unplugged from the wall and have it on? also what keeps it from blowing things up if the generator is on while i am plugged into the wall? |

Thomas you should have a transfer switch or at the very least a power cord coming from the generator to plug into the bus so that only one can be online at a time |

the Honda didn't have that, i have all the bare wire that were the input to the generator removed i am plugged into shore and there is no back feed into those wires? |

Most likely there is an ATS (automatic transfer switch) someplace. Follow the shore input and generator output downstream until you find where they come together, and/or follow the main panel input feed upstream, and you should find it. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |

cant find it, i have been all over the bus and the only one i have is the one for the inverter.seems i would be getting voltage back fed through the wires? i have 2 red 2 white a green and i think a black but not sure as it is really raining and i am not going out to see. |

What type and model of inverter do you have. I suspect it may handle the transfer function |

What kind of inverter do you have? Maybe the inverter is doing the switching. Also, inverters generally do not need external transfer switches -- are you sure the switch you found is processing inverter output? Or is it processing input instead? -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |

inverter blew up so did the switch so i just hooked the wires spanning the relay and removed the plug to the inverter. |

Tom, You're really scaring us now, and I'm serious! Many inverters do the automatic switching, and many buses are set up with what is called a double-throw relay, which when properly wired, will safely perform the same function. Your saying that "inverter blew up so did the switch so I just hooked the wires spanning the relay" sounds like you have taken most of the very necessary separation out of the system! An inverter that will switch between shore and battery power will have DC input terminals from the batteries, AC INPUT terminals from the shore cord, and AC OUTPUT terminals. A 30 Amp double-pole double-throw relay can be added to automatically switch the AC input to the inverter between shore and generator. This would explain why you don't see any switchgear besides the one burned relay. If you are plugged into shore, and the generator has an OUTPUT breaker that hasn't tripped, you are probably not backfeeding it. If the generator does not have an output breaker, you will burn it up by backfeeding it. Also, until you find out for sure, be very careful of the shore cord, because the prongs could be energized with the generator running. Please tell us what make and model inverter it was, and we'll see if we can figure it out? G |

Xantrex it had no ac input. Just dc and a 120 output.it was filled with baking soda from when my bus was blasted.the switcher was also full of soda. When I used the Honda th shore plug was never hot,I will test it when I get all set up with the new generator. |

A 240V 50A plug hooked to the coach wiring , and a pair of sockets , one for pole power , one for noisemaker power will solve your problem. No its not automatic , but its cheap , easy and SAFE! FF |

My new Chinese generator came two days ago, seems to be doa.the fuel pump is not getting any power, they had me tear the thing apart and look for a problem. I finally got her started by hot-wiring the fuel pump to the positive on the battery but we had a little problem when I did this,it grounded out and caused some sparks and I think killed the fuel pump oops.they are sending a new generator next week. |
