I'm about ready to buy - or build - a hide a bed sofa. I just have to figure out what to do about the wheel wells!

My wheel wells are less than 6" high, but I am certain that it will interfere with the sofa.

I thought about building a raised platform for the entire sofa, but wouldn't that make it uncomfortable - to have your legs 'dangleing'?

Does anybody know of a particular model of sofa-bed that can be modified (by cutting/removeing) to allow for installation over the wheel wells?

The sofa that we like (Flexsteel - "Magic Bed") has specific instructions that it must be installed on a flat floor. Apparently won't work for me.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Since we are on a severe $budget$ the plan right now is to find a nice 6 to 7 foot sofa non-bed with wood legs, then trim the one leg shorter to fit on top of the wheel well.

Then build up some sliding drawers that will fit under the sofa creating some more storage. The wood frame of the sofa will have to be reinforced to take the bumps. Good luck.

You need to actually look at the furnitiure to see if you can adapt to fit over the wheel tub. I used a Flexsteel jack knife sofa over mine.

Mark, have you called Flexsteel and talked to someonr there? Sometimes there is a big difference in the instructions and a trouble=shooter's experience. FWIW

True, Magic Bed needs a flat floor because of the steel frame-work on the ends and the back. I have one for my Neoplan conversion. In my Grumman I started by buying a Futon bed made of Birch. I and a friend then totally modified it using the basic framework of the futon. Mine only goes over the wheel well on one end and then only about 6" of it, mainly the leg, which we removed below the seat base. We then made the seat portion into a slide out type. As it slides out the back falls down toward the wall, working much the same as the magic bed. I then had it re-upholstered with furniture grade foam, 5" + fiberfill. It now is a wall hugger type couch, storage underneath when u lift the seat portion, and sits as comfortably as the magic bed----for a whole lot less money.

Most RV sofas will fit over wheel wells. Even many of the ones that make into beds will have space for a wheel well.

Remember, you don't want your sofa bed too, too comfortable otherwise your overnight guests just might decide to move into your bus conversion permanently! :)

My brother has a friend who's done several conversions who says it this way:

"Seats Six
Feeds Four
Sleeps Two"

...and he"s non-negotible!
