There has never been a good heat pump made, just my opinion, based on several reasons. Not a lot of heat in 50 degree air, even less in 40 degree, and practically no usable in 32 degree. Refrigeration service people love them, real job security and loads of service call money to be made! Just the opinion of a retired refrigeration mechanic. Show me one that doesn't have electric strip heaters added and I'll show u one that won't work at all in temperatures under 40 degrees.

Speaking only of the Coleman heat pumps (I don't know about other brands), the problem is getting them to reverse properly so you are drawing heat out of the outside air. I find that I have to turn them off and on a few times to get them to reverse flow, and once they do, they put out great heat down to 40F. But if it is getting that cold I use my Webasto diesel fired heater anyway.

Are they worth buying?-- probably not, you are still going to need a back up furnace. Plus the heat pumps do not put out as much cold air as the same size roof air when used in the cooling cycle.
