Hello people. Thanks for the contribution. I just got back from a 1700 mile round trip venture to look at a 4106 with the VS2-8. I forgot to mention one thing... I'm a little surprised that no-one picked up on it..... Perhaps it doesnt matter..... But this unit also has the 4.11:1, factory I think, rearend Does that matter? Also I did drive it up some hills, I dont know the grade but it was a hill..... It was running less than 1500rpm and was blowing smoke most of the time. Not alot but it was smokin' I am from the great state of Virginia, presently living in Mpls, Mn and I will be driving in the Mountains alot.... Every year I will plan trips and I dont want to fry the trannie.... I dont want to have to pull over and let it cool every time I go up hill...... And I can drive anything that can be driven.... This particular unit simply has the VS2-8 and I want to learn about it and it's usefulness.... is that a real word....hell this aint english class is it? Thanks again Eman |

EARTHman, I have a 4106 with the VS2-8 and 5.55 rear end, It will top out at 85 on the flat and climb hills fairly well. You can adjust the shift points to some degree and I adjusted mine upward to shift at a higher RPM,and have modified it to "shift on demand". the one drawback to this trans is, it will drop out of gear and freewheel at about 15-18 MPH decelerating, which means that when it does that you have no jakes and sometimes 18 MPH is faster than you want to go (steeply down hill), so I have devised a 12V pump that will keep the trans in gear as long as I want it to be. This trans is considered by the knowledgable to be stronger than the V730 and with the overdrive it does well with mileage also.>>>Dan |

Glad to hear someone done it Dan, keeping it in gear below the "hydraulic" point. I was always going to engineer such a setup. Earthman, for your use, I would not particularly recommend the bus you describe for the use you suggest. It is however, one heck of a flatland bus, I crossed the mountains with one just like it with the same gearing, but I stayed on the interstate only. One drawback, is that when you DO reach the pulling point of going out of lockup, you can generate LOTS of heat in a hurry, the 5:55 rear would make it MUCH better suited for your suggested use. |
