Remember when I had the problem of my lights dimming when I made a right had turn???? Well I think I found the problem finally. The starter solenoid has a spring that keeps the contact from touching the terminals unless the solenoid it activated to start the engine. WElL... The spring had failed and as I turned right the the contact disc would run the started motor. Because it was running without the solenoid engaging there was no damage to the Bendix gear or the flywheel. I will be sourcing a new solenoid but for now I just inserted a new spring and cleaned and turned the one terminal contact around for a better connection. This is what it looked like when opened. Notice the broken spring on the end of the contact disc... This is it cleaned up and new spring installed...

Well, that'll make ya think, "Darnit". I rebuilt the plate and the contacts on a MT50 solenoid once with a potato and a piece of soft copper tubing. Now..... that'll give you pause for thought. Anyone know how it was done? Jack, you don't count! Hint.... it took a month. |

What a valiant attempt at comedy..! ...and here I thought you were all hostile over subjectively funny retorts that added no value to a subject. I guess it just goes to show how wrong a guy can be ...eh? A month Dal ? That just happens to be the length of time it takes a Spud to ferment..! (Message edited by Jack_fids on September 03, 2011) |

you re-plated bolt end and disc, using the copper tubing to supply material. |

Bingo! Chessie takes the brass ring! For the record, it wasn't really needed, but I just wanted to see if we could do it. |

funny retorts wasn't the problem; rambling rhymes of many lines that didn't seem to in any way to be relevant.BTW, you can hammer a piece of copper tubing into a disc with enough time. |
