Time to change oil in my allison 644. It used to be that we looked for a C-4/ dex2 or 3. Now Allison wants everyone to buy Transynd, which is rather expensive. I have read where the military uses a 15w40, C-4 oil like Rotella T3. I have also heard of using 30w drive train oil, or hydraulic/transmission oil. I was wondering what others here are using. Thanks

I always used CAT TDTO 10w oil in the 740 good enough for a $35,000 Cat transmission was ok for me never had a problem with one using it over the years.
Cat also sells a synthetic blend that is good oil.
The Transynd is a must for the World Transmissions but I wouldn't spend that type money for oil in a 644 it takes 2 changes

good luck

Thanks- It seems some are happy with regular Dex III. I do like the idea of the TDTO except I just looked up the temp range for the 10 and 30 wts, and they are rather low. The multigrade (TDTO-TMS)is rated to about 110 degrees though. Any reason that wouldn't work?

Yeah, Although the chart was in C, I did a rough switch to F. Unless I am missing something, it looks like the F numbers are -4 to 50 for 10w, 32 to 95 for 30w, and -4 to 109.4 for TMS. Here's the link I got

Moe, I can't access your link, but those temp ranges look like they are meant for ambient air temps, not oil temps.

Sorry if I was not clear. They are ambient air temps as you say, but isn't that critical too?

I'm getting ready to install a 740 in our Eagle. What is the current recommendation?

The Detroit shop did a complete flush and filter change on mine so i did not have to do a second change. The initial cost to change over is more but the savings comes from the increased service interval. Cheaper in the long run.
