i bought a ramsond diesel generator from amazon.com last month, first one came doa. no power to the fuel pump it also came all scratched up.,we spent 3 days back and forth trying to get it running properly. i finally told them to pick this one up and send me another. well we got the 2nd it also came with many deep scratches and paint defect and had a heck of a time getting it to run properly. it now runs but after it warms up it starts slowing down so i get a 30 volt variance from the 120 ac and sounds like it will stall but dose not. any ideas on what the problem might be? when i squeeze the bulb of the boat tank it is connected to it will speed up and act fine as long as i have pressure on the bulb.

My guess would be You have a non vented tank! Try running generator with tank cap off. John L

good luck with it. From some of the reviews, it seems to be worth no more that it sold for:

Sounds like you have a fuel supply problem; can you check fuel pump output pressure? Or install an electric pump. I'm afraid of something this important on a conversion to have problems out on road and no one around to be able to provide service.

It has come to my great mind tha the hose from the fuel filter is not of a great quality and may be collapsing when the inside of the box gets to 200 degrees .... I will change it out in the morning.

From the picture in the review John has graciously posted, this is a standby power/construction type generator that CAN'T be used in a bus bay. This question comes up here yearly when someone asks "why not buy one of these $499.00 generators instead of the $4000.00 Onans?" The archives are full of the explanations, but here goes again!

Construction type generators (the wheels give it away) take their cooling air in one end, and blow it across the engine, the hot air is thrown out the sides with no further ducting. When you put it in a bay, it recirculates its own hot air, and overheats quickly. An RV compartment type generator pulls its cooling air across the engine thru special covers over the fins, and exhausts the hot air downward thru a sealed duct in the bottom of the compartment. The compartment HAS to be equipped with a large louver to allow fresh cooling air to be drawn into the compartment, this fresh air is then drawn across the engine and exhausted out the bottom, which keeps the compartment cool.

Putting that generator in a bay will cause a fire!

the temps are not as bad as you think after an hour the engine is about 200-225 degrees the exuast side is a little warmer at about 425 it is in an insulated metal box with the cage front. the wheels have been removed and seeing that the flash point of wood if in fact there was wood there is 572 f i should be ok. if not i have great insurance.

Well Thomas,
What's the flash point of diesel fuel, engine oil, plastic, rubber, etc? You have all of those in there. Plus, as the generator heats up, the electrical output suffers. If it has a voltage regulator, it probably will malfunction and or fail when it gets really hot. Remember, the good regulators in the "$4000 generators" do this. What will the regulator (if so equipped) in a Chinese gen do? Engines also lose horsepower as the surrounding air gets hotter. Gensets are often rated at 25 C(77 F). Then de-rate 0.5%/10 deg F above the rated air temp. If it's only 140F in your compartment the air temp deraton is 3.15% The derate for 140F fuel is another 3%. MAYBE this is why your gen is slowing down after a half hour!
You MUST figure out the air flow on the genset and make appropriate ducting to get cool air in and hot air out someplace else so it does not easily recirculate.
And if you have put a piece of equipment into a place not intended and cause a fire, your insurance won't pay & you will be paying for someone to haul away your burned, melted bus & fix anything else it damaged like the house!

this is a closed box that it comes in, they say 200 is ok inside the motor box the intake air is in the 100s the exuast is in the 400s but it is all in a open compartment.it is nowhere near the diesel tank nor any plastic but dose sit on a horse stall mat. this is the same compartment i had the propane generator in.

Nothing like a direct drive 1,800rpm genset. Talk to Dick Wright at Wrico International in Eugene, Or about your genset and see what he says about it. You's gets whats you's pays for. Good Luck, TomC

Thomas, you have both a supply hose from the tank to the genset and a return line to the tank, right? Return line carries bubbles and heat back to the tank. If it's supposed to have a return (I've never seen a diesel without one) and it's capped off, it's almost impossible to get fuel to the injectors. Diesels return a portion of what is pumped to the tank and that's how the injection pump gets primed & air bled out of filters, lines & pump.

no return line that i can find, if it did there would be diesel all over the engine as i disconnected the tank an am running a boat tank in another compartment. i think maybe the fuel line might be getting too hot?
