What is the best material and it's thickness for building a fuel tank? Best way to build it, does it need baffles? Tank will be about 2ft wide by 3ft long by 20" high = 74 gal approx. Need advice please, thanks folks |

the tank you're describing is a "step-tank"... on almost every class 7 truck... like the u-hauls, city dump trucks, wreckers etc....... available at most truck wrecking yards for around $50-75.... complete with fittings, sump and drain plug, and a fuelgage sending unit.... made out of mild steel.... |

Yeah, have you checked out your local friendly heavy truck wrecking yards? They are sooos cool to wander around in. Stuff is $cheap$ too. The number of baffles depend upon the application. Anywhere from none to one for every 10 to 20 gallons. I see you concern. I was going to baffle every 30 gallons, but that could be excessive. Again try the wrecking yards. Good luck. |

I have run into a number of cautions to never use a galvanized tank to provide fuel for a diesel engine. I was told that the galvanizing will mess up the injectors. For what it's worth. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher |

Yeah, if you buy a used tank, make sure it had diesel in it to begin with and that it isn't galvanized or badly rusted. Also used diesel tanks can get infected with fuel eating bacteria real easy when the cap is left off. Sterilizing the tank is a good idea. And....to answer your first question, I was told Stainless 308 in 16 gage would be perfect, but I do not know why. Also welding it may be tricky... ...requiring stuff or techinques not enjoyed by shade tree guys like me. Good luck. |
