I am building a coach and am wondering does anyone have GPS systems that the have had experience with good or bad? Suggestions on which one to use would be appreciated.
Thanks

Greg:
I am using a DeLoreme system with my laptop. It does work pretty well but if you have a problem don't expect much help from them. All you get to talk to is a computer that tells you general problems that have occured. I finnally figured my problem out on my own.

I can't talk from experience here but my intentions are to run a full desktop system in the cockpit and a 15" monitor with an inexpensive GPS package (DeLorme or Sony . .?) I am a computer geek, so the more gadgets the better. . . And if you have PC, you can get the GPS bit for cheap. (~$100) I think it will have many advantages over an expensive hand held GPS with a miniscule screen. Also, will have MP3/CD music system, DVD playback, text-to-voice reader and other goodies. . .

As if cell phones don't present enough of a menace on the hiway! Who is going to operate this system as you cruise along at 70?

I use both a Garmin Street Pilot and a Garmin GPS195 aviation unit in my vehicles. The moving map is easy as you do nothing but turn it on. The Street Pilot is definatly better in the road vehicles as you can down load very detailed information for a given area that shows EVERY street. The main maps without the downloaded info are fine for most highway navigation and are the same as the maps in the aviation unit. The downside of the aviation unit is COST! You are paying for the database of airports that is only useful to us pilots.

I use a garmin XL12 with a laptop running Rand McNally street finder and trip maker. "jmaxwell" you are absolutely correct with your concerns! I plan my trip when parked and lay it out on the computer. My wife and 10 year old daughter run the computer and tell me when to turn, my 7 year old is also getting the hang of it!

As long as the cell phone doesn't ring when I am shaving, I can handle the coach without spilling my coffee on the GPS monitor.

But seriously though, according to the product bumpf, the Earthmate GPS Receiver w/Street Atlas by DeLorme uses voice synthesized spoken navigation directions . . .

Anyone considering GPS for the bus should look at Door to Door Co-Pilot or Co-Pilot 2000 from Travroute. It runs on a laptop. Easy screen while driving and the maps even show the interior roads of the larger campgrounds, although they aren't named. The detail is incredible and one CD-ROM has the whole US. Makes it easy to plan trips, rather that swapping regional disks. The CD can be copied to the hard drive if you have enough room. I have had this for 3 years and the only thing that goes wrong is if MY co-pilot tries to zoom in and I hit a bump. Her fingers touch something they shouldn't and she doesn't know how to re-set it! Check it out before buying a dedicated GPS.

I too use the Co-Pilot 2000. It is pretty good, and I consider it reliable. One neet feature is the program will talk to you with verbal directions for turns and such. It will also respond to limited verbal commands from you. It is not difficult to see the screen and I have not had a problem of using it in the day with the sun shining. Check it out, it is pretty good.
