Is anyone else as befuddled as I am over the uselessness of these lights? Thay are another examample of why some of these outdated laws need to be ridded of. Maybe Shean can shed some light on the subject.LOL I haul heavy equipment quite a bit and one of the things that is required when you are moving any articulating machine is that the anti articulating arm must be installed ( It's perpose is to keep from crushing someone during maintanance) i told the cop that maybe all machines being moved should be welded to the lowbed. At that point the cop seemed angry with me.

Of course, the rules come from days of yore when we had only two lane roads and they were much narrower than today. The lights were to indicate a vehicle over 80 inches wide which usually meant oncoming traffic had to pull onto the shoulder.

Why haven't the rules changed?
Why do we still have pennies?
Why do we still have the electoral college?
Why do we still love Lucy?

I can shed a little light on the reasoning most of those systems are nitrogen charged and pressure stays on the system the John Deere 644 loader was terrible about braking the chains on the rear and turning on the low boy.
My driver told me that which I thought was BS till I saw it happen wasn't just on the one 644 all 3 of mine would do that

good luck

With a 102" wide bus with the headlights also set wide, without the clearance lights, from a distance at night the vehicle could be mistaken for two motorcycles riding side by side. And then the story goes having someone trying to ride up the middle of what looks like two motorcycles. Good Luck, TomC
