Monday started out to be a great day until I saw a nice looking green truck with a state DNR emblem on the door pull into the driveway. I was sitting on the steps enjoying a cup of coffee when they pulled in so it seemed the polite thing to do would be to offer them some coffee,, one of them I knew from my past with the state and the other appeared to be nice guys also but from outside the area,, when I asked them what brings them here to visit I was told it actually wasn't a visit but more of an official stop as part of an investigation on a complaint. It seems that they had recieved a complaint that I was running an illegal and unlicensed campground and was performing mechanical and structural changes to buses and rv's of all sorts without the proper state paperwork or licenses. I asked if I could plead insanity they said it was far to early for that but they wondered if I would be kind enough to show them my campground and repair facility, I told them to look around, they were sitting in the middle of it. I pointed to the 30 amp outlet on the wall that my iggle was plugged into, they wanted to see the rest of the electrical posts, I told them that is the extent of it, they asked where the garage was, I told them only on my drawing boards that from time to time I get company when friends stop over for a few days and we sometimes putter with their buses a little cause I enjoy making small boards out of bigger ones, that brought up the question of my books and what I charge, I told them the going rate was a cup of coffee but I was going to raise my rates to include a piece of pie at some point, they asked what I charge per night of camping, I assured them that the cost was included in the cup of coffee and I asked them where they had heard of my undercover operation and they said the complaint came out of florida but they were not at liberty to name anyone. As they were leaving they assured me that they would be keeping a close eye on me and would be stopping back from time to time to visit, I told them how happy that would make me cause I truely enjoy the company of others and if they wished to stay a couple of days I'd share the 30 amp outlet and we could do some fishing, so I guess the anti-KOA is a dead project for now along with the sawdust piling feature of my illegal operations. I can't imagine anyone that I had pissed off that early in the week but anything is possible as I'm such an irritable and unreasonable person anyone that wishes to visit is still welcome and if they wish to have a shelf installed we can still do that if we are careful and watch for lowflying patrol planes or maybe military drones that can be sent in to check on my compliance with the law. I'm glad that we have civic minded individuals that are concerned with compliance with all local and state laws, makes me proud to be an American and live in the land of the not-so-free. | ||

I'm glad that we have civic minded individuals that are concerned with compliance with all local and state laws, makes me proud to be an American and live in the land of the not-so-free. There are enough "laws" on the books to make any person a felon . If you breath , you are creating CO2 , a crime to the EPA. FF | ||

Well Dan, I'll bet it was a result of your "Anti KOA" post of a while back. You have also posted a lot of information here about the number of repairs you have made to RVs with improperly installed seat belts and charred extension cords, etc. That sounds to me like enough ammunition for the local KOA to use to get even? And just what KOA would that be? there are none within hundreds of miles in any direction here. According to a conversation with an attorney yesterday I am doing nothing wrong,, I can help out anyone I choose with no legal problems of any kind. There is no copyright on the term anti-KOA so that is not the issue, helping friends doesn't require a license unless I'm a 'for profit' organization and I don't meet the criteria of a 'non-profit' organization so thats not the problem. I'm thinking one of the providers of the charred cords is feeling a little vindictive, well bring it on if thats the case. I sincerely hope that the one or ones that reported my "illegal" activies to the authorities have supporting evidence, in michigan it's against the law to make a false police report and the DNR carries the weight of a police agency. My attorney wrote a letter of inquiry to the DNR,, requesting the investigation of the report for validity, now the ball falls in their lap to support the charge. He also requested a copy of the charges that were leveled against me, that should prove to be enlightening. I've been cautioning people against taking the word of 'so called' experts for years, I've always encouraged people to double check information thats given, just because a person may have written a book doesn't guarentee it's accurate, as an example, any thread a person reads on these boards are filled with conflicting posts,, which one is the correct one or are any of them accurate, I tell people not to bet their life on the words written in an internet site. The author of the false report doesn't have to be a KOA owner, it may very well be somebody that has a fondness for extension cords or may be somebody looking to put out the second edition of a conversion book or could just be somebody that enjoys running a law enforcement agency in circles for recreational purposes and as far as a 'bet' goes,, I'm not much for gambling. | ||

Well Dan, most likely the DNR guys didn't want to say where the complaint originated. I've asked police officers who made the complaint when I knew exactly who it was 'cause only certain neighbors know certain things and it's usually just one who is the local trouble maker. The investigating officers never disclosed who complained. See, it must be legal for the police to lie to us, but it's definately not the other way around. It could be an immediate neighbor. Maybe someone on the road to your place who sees several coaches come through & doesn't like the traffic, dust or noise. | ||

Jim, it doesn't matter who made the complaint, I know that they are a protected source,, that part hasn't changed since I retired from the state but what can be done is they can be made to verify their information, as far as my location in concerned, I'm at the end of a paved road that isn't heavily traveled by anyone lol, there just arn't many people out this way, my only neighbor within several miles is a nice lady that lives down the road a ways from me,, we get along great. I've tinkered with rv's of all sorts for over 30 years, I've never concidered myself a 'busnut' simply because I own one, I've also got a travel trailer and a motorhome. | ||

Dan, just look back here at who has you in his gunsights, has taken verbal shots at you, hasn't posted in support of your little piece of heaven AND who is from FLORIDA...... The most vehement anti Fids person on this forum hails from FLORIDA, after he decided to publicly engage his enragement with me & the way I write, he sent off a vicious email full of four letter words & vengeance.... Jack, it's not important who did it, I asked for the DNR to get proof of the allegations and then take the corrective action they feel is proper, it'll probably take them some time to put it all together cause I don't know if the charge came from an indiviual directly or thru another agency,, meanwhile I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing, I'm doing a benefit for Wounded Warriors to help them on a fundraiser and I've got that old alaskan truck camper to finish up, I don't charge for this stuff so I get the luxury of working on my own schedule, after that I've got some storm windows to whack together for an old guy ( nope, it's not me lol) I sleep good at night and thats all that matters to me, how other people sleep is their problem. I'm not blaming anyone, there isn't any need for that, they know who they are. | ||

Protected source? If you go down often enough under FOIA pretty soon someone will forget what to white out and then you will know all. Just ask for and pay for all the copys of the entire file each time and even if you get the same person they can't remember what side you are on and what to hide. Tell us who it turns out to be.... There is no such thing as a protected source, sometimes you may need to own a Senator, but everything is for sale. | ||

We used to live across the street from a woman who stood in her 2nd floor window with her binoculars frequently, snooping on the neighbors. Everyone on the block knew she did it but no one would confront her or say anything. When we planned a Saturday Bar-B-Que we sent out the invitations that included the line "Be Sure to Bring Your Binoculars!". That afternoon when I spied the woman in the window I had everyone stand-up and look thru their binoculars at her, looking back at them...! I found that mass action usually brings results. I figure that the person has enough problems of their own I really don't care who it was, I was curious but I'm not doing anything wrong and now they have overturned a legal can of worms that I don't need to touch, the DNR guys were very nice about everything but they clearly were upset that 3 of them had been sent on a wild goose chase when I'm sure they had better things to do especially this time of year when several hunting seasons are in full swing. I'll wait for the paperwork that says the whole thing has been dismissed then I'll ask them if they are going to file false report charges, I'm sure that because it involves at least 2 states the attorney generals are involved, in michigan you have to notify the attorney generals office of any warrents or investigations that involve agencies from another state so I'm sure the embarassement extends further than just the 3 officers that were sent out to talk to me. The person has to look in the mirror each morning and by now I'm sure they know they are looking at a fool, thats somewhat rewarding in itself. I'll just see where it all leads, eventually it all comes out anyway. | ||

Been following this fiasco of a story from the beginning and although I find it somewhat entertaining, I also find it to be somewhat childish on Cody's part. It appears to be his way of getting the attention he thinks he deserves while living in the wilderness ALONE! Now for those of you that are curious and like me, shouldn't put any more time into this than I am with this, It appears Cody and I, like all good men do at one point or another, had a disagreement which carried on over at my Facebook page where I unfortunately had to choose to UN friend him as one of my friends. I say unfortunately because I never have had to delete anyone before. Oh well, it is what it is. With that said, I find that he may have had his feelings upset. Sorry, Cody but I would like very much for you to get to the bottom of your investigation. One thing you and your insinuations or somewhat accusations towards me or anyone in Florida is really far fetched. I can honestly say from this end that nobody in Lakeland or Florida for that matter gives a damn what you do up there in your parts. You really don't make that big of a difference. Now do as you did on the bcm board, contact your lawyers, send out your threats, talk your trash, but then think who the REAL fool really is! A lot of people can see it! The people that know ME, know me! They DO know how the game is played and WHO the players are! And Fids, I would have thought that as well spoken as you come across, you would have been more mature than to get caught up in this bs and make the statements you made but again, it is what it is or in this case, you are what you are! Don't try and lure me into a pissing match with this because neither if you are worth the time I just spent on it so as far as I'm concerned, I'm done! Ace, for some reason it seems far more important to you to prove your innocence than it is to me to prove yours or anyone elses guilt, I think I'm made it perfectly clear that I have no interest in finding out who did it, even a person of limited intellegence should have figured out that part. To me,, your like a mosquito that you can hear in the dark but never lands so you can never seem to be able to swat them, your mearly an irritant that most of us endure, nothing more, now go look in your mirror again and see what you see, I haven't accused you of anything, nor anyone else so if you're on a guilt trip of some sort it's not of my making, as I said in my post, I'll let the investigation run it's course and see what turns up, if nothing then so be it, if it points in another direction then it's up to them to determine what action to take, meanwhile, I'll continue to work on my projects. I've been sitting here for hours wondering how to word this, I got the call from the DNR this afternoon that the allegations were found to be unfounded and have been dismissed, I asked what about the snake that set me up, their reply was that the choice on whether to pursue would not be made at their level and they couldn't comment on it. For over 30 years I've spent my time and material on doing what I could to make life easier for other people,, I've worked on travel trailers, motorhomes, many buses and when it came time to settle accounts I asked for a cup of coffee and told them to enjoy life and stop to help somebody else along the way, from time to time I was given a donation of some sort and it went a long way to cover material or electric costs but I was always happy to just help someone and figured it was all worth it and it was and is, I've found that it takes very little to make me happy. Today after long thought, I've decided the anti-KOA is a dead project and the woodworking end is also finished, I may from time to time help somebody with a project but I just don't feel good enough anymore to continue to set myself up as a target. I feel that if I set up a camping area, I'll be continually explaining to someone that it isn't a campground and it just isn't what I want to do, I have a deep love of woodworking and even that will mostly stop,, I'll always have the coffee pot on for anyone that pulls in and I've got some 30 amp electric for them too and maybe I'll break out the table saw from time to time but I just don't feel good enough to battle with people that are going to always be looking for a fight. I guess that because I've got a bus that doesn't make me a busnut cause I've also got a Revcon and even a 1964 Frolic travel trailer, I guess it is the company of the people that I enjoyed and hopefully can continue to enjoy that made it all worthwhile. The sleepness nights I've spent lately worrying over this DNR nightmare and the money that I couldn't afford to spend on legal consultations took it's toll and just isn't worth it so whoever it was that wanted to hurt me, you win, there will be no more anti-KOA, and not even a small pile of sawdust to upset anyone. I'll be here but I'm not going to fight over this stuff, I just don't feel good enough and life is too short anyway. | ||

you need to get right back up and do what you were doing..... you were doing nothing illegal and you were helping many people that may of not been able to help themselves. the anti koa is a great thing and was not hurting anyone. in fact when i move to new york state i plan to have a few sites of my own on my property,and maybe have a few more busses for guests to stay in. and why give up something like woodworking that you love so much? don't let these bastards win.....good luck and good health!! | ||

Thomas, if I were you, I'd verify whether you will be legally able to have camping on your property before buying it. The place we bought here in NC is restricted from commercial use but camping is considered "residential use" and so nobody could prevent it. But at the same time, building & zoning can put the kibosh on anything you do. One complaint or one official person noticing you constructing anything can make life a misery 'till you give up & pay to remove what's already there. | ||

Cody I don't talk too much about things but I want you to remember that in spite of all yours and my own likes and dislikes,I have continued to do what I wanted to do with what I wanted to do it with. Those so called DNR or tax collectors, code enforcers or whatever title they may carry and show you, They can't stop a good man or woman from achieving their goal or projects in this life and it won't cost you a dime either. Guys, I appreciate the votes of confidence but there is more to it and not as simple as it could be, at some point I have to pick which battles to fight and this isn't one of them, I'll be doing my thing and it doesn't involve the anti-KOA,, thats a dead issue,, I didn't mean to sound like I'm giving up, what I'm doing is changing course, this incident was what it took to convince me that I was doing the wrong thing, you are all great people but your also very capable of doing for yourselves and doing a far better job at it than I can, all thru the DNR investigation I thought about options and what I have always tryed to do was to help people and I realized that you guys don't need help from me but others do. I've been approached by wounded warriors to do fundraisers for some local vets that are missing body parts or need other things in their life that just arn't being done by the VA, we all know how helpfull the government is. I've also been offered my old spot at the MACC by darryl, that is something I enjoyed and that involves being in columbus ohio for most of july, I won't be performing on stage anymore but I'll be running the sound for him, my fingers don't work well enough anymore to play live but I can still play dead. I really have an idiot in florida to thank for setting me on the right track and at some point after running him over I'll pin a note on his flattened chest that says what I think. I think that instead of trying to sail into the wind I'll tack a little. | ||

You CAN NOT let the negative or destructive behavior of others sway you from that what you know to be good and honest. You guys make this change sound like I'm joining the priesthood, (actually I am hoping for sainthood, St Cody< patron saint of those who can only count to 9 has a nice ring to it doesn't it?) What I'm doing is something that I've been doing all along, just more of it, I've been DJing for several years as a way to put fuel in the bus and a way to help people thru fundraisers, now I'm going to be doing more of it cause the need is great in our area right now. As far as the MACC (Musicians Against Childhood Cancer) as many of you know, my affiliation with darryl atkins goes back many years, the MACC is a bluegrass benefit put on by darryl and his brother in columbus ohio as a fundraiser for St Judes he has headliners from all over the country, the top names in the bluegrass community all gather for a week of music for the kids of St Judes. These are both things that are near and dear to my heart, I've decided that to fight the system at this point in my life is foolish, you might say that one kernal of bad popcorn can spoil the whole bag and it did. I'll still be around and still pissing off everyone on a regular basis, but after much soul searching and quiet thought, I feel that this would be more rewarding both emotionally and less costly for me, (I just paid a 474 dollar light bill, REA is extremely expensive now and I've been sweating the tools a lot) I'm not out to change the world, just my corner of it a little. | ||

It just seems to me that I have read this same response FAR TOO MANY TIMES on a COmmunity Forum. The SOLE REASON lies in the behavior of those who cannot tolerate anyone who is different or not a carbon copy of themselves. And it is all the result of just a couple of mouthy SFB clowns whose heads are firmly planted up their backside exits. This country is about to take steps toward making BULLYING a crime, when it does the BULLIES will be the biggest whiners & expose themselves in the process. Free Speech is no free lunch.... you have to pay for the lies , deceptions & attacks and you do so with your reputation as a intelligent human & the desire of others to associate with you. let it go. If he was doing things against local code, he needs to comply or get code changed. If he wasn't...move on. If someone reported him and they investigated and found problems, then he needs to desist or comply with local ordinances. Many of us, including myself, have dealt with these kind of problems. I'm surprised we don't have several getting into hot water using VO or WVO and not paying road tax on it. Personally, I have enough to deal with where I live. Could have easily been someone that lives close to him and reported it. | ||

OK, guys , I'm confused over this, am I now the bad guy because I changed course? I'm retired from law enforcement and I won't place myself in a position of haveing to appear in court and answer to charges of illegal operation, I don't think anything I did was illegal and that seems to be supported by the charges being dropped as "no cause for action", and John, I do know who placed the complaint, that much I found out and it isn't a neighbor or anyone close to me, it originated from one person. While this was all playing out my first thoughts were about how much I enjoyed life so much more before I had bought my bus and simply divided my time between my job, the classroom, and music along with some woodworking, then over time I shifted more into bus operations and that became the focal point and I noticed I enjoyed it less as the fuel charges increased and pressure mounted to create each project in a more impressive manner, I just enjoyed it less so my choice to simplify by life started with the move back out from town to my little 'Hole in the wilderness" and no ace, I don't live alone, I have my family around me and a constant stream of friends pasing thru, some with buses and some without, the vehicle doesn't make the person, today I called for information at Jamies school on finishing a degree that I started and never completed, I've also got a benefit lined up for tomorrow night for a child that has to go to Ann Arbor to the university hospital for surgury, lately it seems like a massive weight has been lifted off me. I don't feel that I've given up anything but gained everything, I realize this may not make sence,, it's kinda like going to the south pole to look at a snowflake, we'll have an abundace of them up here soon, it's not the destination, it's the journey. | ||

Dan - Since I'm not a coffee drinker, I'd be more than happy to bring a two-pound can of your favorite from the local grocer should my travels take me to the UP. That is, if I can survive getting across Minisquito alive! Maybe you could help figure out why it is that every time I work with wood, I measure four times and still cut it short! RJ, should your travels take you into the UP, I'll provide all the coffee you can drink, just because I've abandoned the idea of a campground doesn't mean I don't have room for my friends, I've not only got a big yard but a very nice coffeepot too and I'd be happy to check your tape measure, I'm assuming you realize that if you take 10 tapes and measure something, you'll get 10 different measurements I always use the same one for an entire project, thats just one of my many quirks. Our mosquito's spend time and a lot of effort training the the little bloodsuckers from wisconsin but I'm not sure if they have any terrorist training camps beyond that, they could use fresh blood the poor little buggers are getting so anemic that they've had to resort to walking and now with cold weather coming on it's so sad to see them hitchhiking in their long underware. Grab Don on the way thru bakersfield and he can show us how to properly cook up sirloin tips,, he's got a pretty good handle on them critters. I waited all summer for him to stop in and am still on the porch watching down the road. If your buying I like that old A&P 8 O'Clock coffee. | ||

Just got home from doing a benefit for a little girl thats heading to Ann Arbor to the university hospital for surgury, don't know what the grand total was but at 7pm we had cleared 2500 for them, made me feel good, wish I had taken the bus so I could have postponed the trip home, very tired. I'll bet this was the first time "the Wiggles" had been played in a VFW club and adults danceing to it along with a special little kid. Next week it's off to the eagles club to do one for a guy with liver cancer, his wife has a degenerative eye disease and is loosing her sight, this is so much more rewarding than fighting, I feel so much better, I'm glad I got back to something that was important to me in the past, I found out that it still is. I want to thank everyone,, I don't care if you gave me crap or support, I feel like a human again, it's a good feeling. | ||

Final tally on the benefit was a tad over 3200, the little girl has a brain tumor and they are going to try to remove it, I know it'll be a comfort to her to know that not only is her mom there but her dad is also. I've been so blessed with my pension from the state, my pension isn't a lot but it takes care of my needs, my wants can wait but my needs are taken care of by it, there are so many that are hurting badly with the economy the way it is, I'm a soft touch for the children, especially when they are sick, it's an honor to be able to do a little to help them. |
