Hello,

I am stripping my Neoplan Cityliner and preparing to do the interior conversion, I am considering buying several stainless steel Ikea kitchen cabinets, reinforcing the corners (glue & screw), and cutting the back to follow the wall contour and installing them as a kitchen. Has anyone had experience with Ikea products in a motorhome application???

Stopping in at Ikea I made a list and by the time I made it out of the maze which is thier store, I had everything I needed to furnish my bus listed out. A beautiful couch which converts to a bed, kitchen cabinets, a bed with lifting matress for storage under, TV brackets, etc. etc.

Any comments before I pull into the parking lot and load up???

I looked at their web site and saw nothing but Particleboard w/plastic trim (Akurum line), no SS. It all looked like something you would buy at WalMart! As for SS, seems as though besides being a somewhat sterile looking installation more suited to a hospital, it had also better be custom to the application, otherwise you're in for a lot of work fitting it. And just why would u want to buy something when u recognize beforehand that u will have to re-inforce the construction of it. Sorry, but you did ask for comments. Why not try a local major building center or local cabinet shop for cabinet work?

I like stainless where ever I can aford it. It is tuf to work with & I've worked with it a good bit. I too looked at their web site and found these materials listed for the SST looking wall cabinets; Particleboard, ABS plastic, Foil. I agree with James M. If you are going to need to re-inforce it, then I wouldn't buy it. All the cabinets in my bus (bedroom, bath, kitchen, living area) are made of A-grade oak face 3/4" ply. I suggest staying clear of particleboard; that's for RVs. joe 4106-2119

Go to http://www.ikea-usa.com/ms/en_US/virtual_catalogue/main.html look under kitchen, then "Kalsebo", there you will find stainless steel cabinets with rolorbearing drawers.

As for the whole "Hospital" comment, I was looking for constructive advice, not an opinion on asthetics or style. You do not know what the design is nor the taste of the person for whom it is being designed, furthermore, stainless kitchen cabinets are quite common in high end modern designs praised not only for thier beauty but for thier fuctionality. BTW only the cabinet fronts are stainless so modification of the sides (at the wall line) would simply need a jig saw.

I am converting a Neoplan Cityliner, a very modern design not well suited to wood cabinets IMHO. I intend to build everything below window level where ever possible to retain the open, well lit feeling the bus now has. No feeling of being in a tunnel, windows from waist high to the roof-line. The living area will overlook the driver with low back sofa, open plan kitchen in SS with only wire shelves above the sink and stove, two small refers with glass fronts and a counter on top. Aft of this there will be a desk on one side and a single bed on the other for my daughter, behind the desk and bed will be a wall deviding the bedroom which will have a shower in one corner and a queen bed.

Quality: Yes Ikea does use particle board, so do many other furniture makers, where Ikea fails IMHO is the fasteners used in assembly, hence my thoughts on glue and screwing the corners. Friends of mine had their home kitchen done three years ago with Ikea cabinets, they have two children and cook like Pros, to date thier kitchen still looks great and not one thing has failed.

Modification: Please! everything needs to be modified. As for the reason behind buying something which needs to be modified rather than making it... I could buy every kitchen cabinet I need complete from Ikea for half of what the stainless drawer fronts and hardware would cost. You simply can not compete with mass production. Now it seems to me that if one were to simply cut the back of the side panels of the cabinets to follow the contour of the bus wall, leave a notch to run electrical, etc. then reinforce the corners as the cabinets will be in a bus which will have some movement. Then they could be easily installed...

If one chose they could even make the cabinet sides from 3/4 marine ply and just use the Ikea hardware and drawer fronts and still come out far ahead of buying all the materials to build from scratch saving time & money.

Now to really get the thoughts flowing, look a the post on Vegatable Oil!

Thanks for the exchange of ideas!

Chris, I like your idea very much in theory, but I'm no cabinetmaker. I am also trying to keep almost everything below window level. If you want to see a very nice stainless compact unit, goto:

norbert wangen

and click on the K2 Kitchen. Just keep clicking on the main picture for more. You will need the flash plugin.

That little bad boy probably costs more than an entire kitchen, and not very practical, but has the seeds of some good ideas for compactness. I *really* like the sliding countertop.

Semi custom drawers or cabinet facings are OTS in "real" plywood , and not too expensive.

Only the cabinet face & sides need to be created from ply NOT CHIPBOARD!!

and there is now stick on SS that goes on like wallpaper if the TOTAL SS look is desired.

Although SS shines , inside it will be Dark , not light , in terms of the size apearence of the space.
Many folks use light colors to make the coach seem larger.
