Capt Ron
I will try to give you basic battery info

If the battery is at end of life, even if they are disconnected from the cable, they will go dead.

You say if left HOOKED UP they are dead in a few hours... you seem to have a big drain on the battery if they are in good condition.
The amp guage seems not to be working, you may have a short before the amp guage shunt. If you have am amp clamp on meter, it might be able to help you find the problem.

your head lights are dim, they should be connected AFTER the Amp guage shunt so a short will do this.

If you know where the shunt is, try disconnecting it and see if the battery has load (current) on the positive cable. If not, the problem is beyond the shunt. It sounds, at this point, it may be before or AT the shunt for the Ampmeter.

Sorry I can't be more informative for you, I hope it is a small problem.

Do you have a bad alternator? Sounds like you are barely charging and an alternator can short and drain the battery. Try disconnecting only the alternator and see if the batteries hold a charge. I just recently had that very problem in a car. New alternator fixed it.
