A friend of mine needs a gear set with a 1 to 1 ratio for the angle drive steering box for his GMC 4107. It is the box at the bottom of the steering column that turns the shaft to the power steering box on the axle. It is presently a 1 to 1.5 ratio which is for a manual set up. This causes too much play with power steering. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know if the stock gears changed the output direction BUT,,
It might be loads easier to replace the steering column ., telescope and tilt , from the wreckers.

I did the same thing on my bus. The 90 degree miter box is separate from the steering column. With the air assist steering, the turns lock to lock were 8. Changing the miter box from 1.5 to 1 to 1 to 1 and the faster Sheppard box went down to 3.5 turns lock to lock and finger tip steering. One of the best changes I did. The rotation of the two boxes was the same. Good Luck, TomC

Bill be sure to tell your buddy to check the rotation of the input to the 90^ box with the output as some of the GM buses turn left going in and turns right coming out, yes it happens that when you get it all together when you go to turn left the bus will turn right. not a nice feeling. try finding a transit yard close and ask the how their buses work and you may find one going to the scrape yard and get the gear box there. mel 4104

Thanks everyone. Mentioning the reverse direction brings back an incident another friend had. He installed a Shepard power steering box and took the bus out to test it and it turned opposite. What a feeling. Learned that some Shepard boxes turn opposite in a hurry. Will mention about the possible direction reversal in the angle box.

Would the transit build by MCI have the right pieces in it ? If so, I know where there is one.

According to the book it looks like it would work if it is 1 to 1 ratio. This ratio was only used in the power steering application. They both have the 3 bolt pattern and the gear on the same side so rotation will be the same. How much do they want and I will let Evert know.

Paul

We are in Kindersly, finishing the redo of the oldest son's house that they bought a year ago.

All done exept for baseboard in two bedrooms, which I told my son he would have to get some experience and do that. How else are they going to learn?
Going home in the morning and your phone would have rung if we were a bit closer.

Saskatchewan is sooo flat, that you cannot hide anywhere. Coming and going via Provost, the originating point for that XL pipeline that is somewhat controversial. A large tankfarm in place.
Maybe we should ship it west across the pacific.
They will take all we can produce.

Bill -

The gearbox you're looking for was OEM on the 4108s and 4905s, which would make it an easy swap.

Double-check w/ Luke, but I think the Fishbowls used the same gearbox. 1-888-262-2434
