What is the best lubricant for these cables? Ours is a midships engine ...the cables are about 15 feet long.

I have pulled the tach cable and cleaned it with mineral spirits. The speedo cable wont come out and I am afraid to force it. Haven't gone to the "other end" to try from there, but both need lubrication, I'm pretty sure. Both were jumping a bit.

Thanx... and trust all had a great Memorial Day!

Over the years I have found that a spray graphite is the best bet for speedo cables.

Grease over time will lose it's oil content and dry up which is why the needles end up bouncing.

A good liberal application of graphite spray will last a long long time.

Though, I will say it will be difficult to lube it properly with graphite spray if you can't pull the cable from the housing

RC, I used molybdenum grease- used to be called "assembly lube" in the old days. Worked really well. But the best fix I ever found for noisy clunky speedometer cables was to just bite the bullet and replace em with nice quiet wires....and an electronic speedo... geez is it quiet now!! Soooooo quiet!!

The speedo cable will probably only come out from one end, and you may find a little gearbox or a splice somewhere near the engine end. Mine had both. And one Crown I took apart actually had solid tubing for part of the run.. mine was a flex cable the whole way.

I actually had 2 sets of spare cables until a couple months ago, I finally chucked em into landfill... oops...

Cheers

ugh,2D-- good way to loose precious tools!! Liquid wrench is a bunch of solvents with a "little" lubricant mixed in. But not a good idea as a permanent lube, unless you're in a real pinch.

But.... do it your way...

the main problem with spedo is the same with air tools....the doucheing out is very important...you have gum in there ..once it was grease...now it's gum....unhook both ends of cable..let trans end dangle...fill spedomiter end...put on a drill motor ,run for 30 seconds and repete

Unhook the cables from the dash and keep squirting in WD40 until it drips out the cables on the mill and trans.

You will also have to disconnect the cables from the pump and tranny. They should unhook and just hang down to the ground.

The carrier solvent will dry up leaving the dry film WD40 is famous for. This SHOULD stop any needle jumping...

...which the older mechanical Stewart Warner mechanical gages for famous for. Now if your have VDO replacements....

....then you are simply doomed. He he he. CROWNS FOREVER!!! :) :) :) Henry of CJ

And......thanx for all the chatter and help!
I followed all Instructions :)...now hope it works smooth and silent.

Gary....took your advice and chased the cable and found exactly as you described. Came apart easily and after cleaning went back in even easier. Must have been about 25 feet in length.

Thanx again for all the input.

BTW, dogs,,, LW was my choice prior to the question. Good stuff,,,,for most things.

Mr. Dog,

I think I located a spelling error...

"the main problem with spedo is the same with air tools....the doucheing out is very important...you have gum in there ..once it was grease...now it's gum....unhook both ends of cable..let trans end dangle...fill spedomiter end...put on a drill motor ,run for 30 seconds and repete"

spedomiter= speedometer
repete= repeat

Just kidding, if it wasn't for spell check I'd be in foul shape. LOL

Hit a motorcycle or ATV place, & ask the guy for a cable oiler (about $5). It's a heck of a lot easier than using WD-40.
