Hi All

Another Bus converter told me about a company that has 5' X 5' sheets of 1/8 thru 3/4 inch hardwood plywood--> http://www.hardwoodgroup.com/

the 1/8 sheets are about $7-8 / sheet - great price - they're call Baltic Birch - or Russian Birch (seems that europe uses 5' x 5' as a somewhat standard size)

This would be great for me to do my RTS ceiling with. Because I will leave my natural bow in the ceiling and will install 2 cabinet mounting support rails runing front to back about 5' part, it will be very easy to Ozite carpet these 5 x 5 panels - press each piece against one cabinet mounting rail and bow the plywood in the center and set it up against the opposite cabinet mounting rail - then just push the bow up until it re-bows the other way snug agaist the ceiling. I've used this trick on the classic GMC front wheel drive Motorhome I used to own. Then I will just use trin along the 5' side to side seams. There will be enought stuff that will also help hold the panel to the ceiling like (a/c grills - exhaust fan grills - thin style light fixtures - etc)

Plus they will be easy to remove and replace

Now my problem - I can only find these great panels at http://www.hardwoodgroup.com/ and they are in:
Charlotte Hardwood Center
Chattanooga Wood Products Center
Greenville-Spartanburg Hardwood Center
Plywood & Plastics of Norfolk
Plywood & Plastics of Roanoke
Charleston Hardwood Center
Greensboro Hardwood Center
Plywood & Plastics of Richmond
Raleigh Hardwood Center

The hardwood Group does not ship to florida and 5 x 5 is just too big to make Fedex ground or ups ground practical

Is there anyone coming from or passing by any of the above Hardwood group locations and will be near the Daytona Florida area in the next few weeks that could pick up my order (5-8 sheets - just under 100 lbs) and help me get them down to Florida??

Thanks
Pete

I get Baltic birch from my local building supply store. They don't stock it but it is only a day away. Certainly someone nearer to you must be able to get it. Be a little pushy when they look at you like you're crazy. Most of the guys behind the counter haven't got a clue what this stuff is. Ask them to call their plywood wholesaler/supplier. That usually works.

Good luck

Hard to believe that Baltic Birch is that difficult to find---very common use in high end cabinet work, primarily for drawer bodies. It is measured in metric sizes and most common size is approx. 5'x5'x7/16" thick, 8-9 ply (although u can get it in 5'x8' and 5'x9'-8" up to approx. 3/4" thick(15ply). Also, due to the number of plies, it is heavy and almost impossible to bow, so u may want to re-think your application; I have never heard of it in less than 7 ply. Certainly, the price u got is cheap, in fact, super cheap. Normal price today is about $25 for a 5x5 and 8 sheets of it will weigh a lot more than 100#

Pete,

If you can find someone coming through Hampton Roads, Virginia down to Daytona, Florida, I will be happy to get the wood you need. I can drive over to Norfolk and pick it up. I am asking around here. People I know if they are headed to Florida anytime soon.

Hi James M.

The 1/8" 5' x 5' 3 ply Baltic Birch is approx 12 pounds per sheet - 8 x 12#'s = less than 100#'s

I did find 1/4 and 3/4 multiply 5 x 5 sheets but they could not get the 1/8

I'm with James on this. Baltic birch should be easy to find. Perhaps a local cabinet maker could give you a lead. I used this stuff for all my drawer carcasses and cabinet shelves. I like it because its cheap and has no voids in the plies like cabinet birch.

The 5x5 dimension makes it difficult to haul. You have to leave it hanging out of the side of your pickup if you have a small pickup (Ranger)like I do.

As for you roof application, you might consider 1/4" Luan plywood. It bends fairly easily. Baltic Birch is pretty rigid.

Pete: Your last post jogged my memory. The hardwood store I shop at does have 1 sided baltic birch, 3 ply I think, and mahogany back, 1/8" and mostly filler, and in door skin size, as TD pointed to. Not what comes to my mind when someone mentions baltic birch. ; I think of construction finish grade and 1/8" does not qualify for construction IMHO. However, for what u are using it for, it sounds like the ticket. Thinnest 5'x5' I've seen is a heavy 5/16th (again, metric)
