190 is on the high side for any 71 block, although not likely to cause any problems, he is running close to his upper limit (200 as I understand it) and not much margin for those long pulls on a hot day. Your 173-175 is much more in the range of what it should be.

Mel. Some of my 671/04 engine temp experience.
Before I changed my radiator out from a 4 passage to a 7 passage $675 (cost of the core). the temp on the flats stayed at 180f as soon as I started to put any load on it , like long climes, mountains or steep hills the temp would gradually go up to as high as 205f.In the past 18 years I have blown two cylinder head gaskets.I am hoping these problems will end with having the new rad core installed,( the weakest part on the 671 is the head gasket, they later made many improvements but not to the 671) it keeps the temp at 175f ( goes up to 180 them the site opens rad water flows at 160f back to the engine).
I have found that the temp gauge at the driver reads 10f lower than at the engine, ( this I have proven by installing a manual guage from the water manifold into the back bedroom,)and when the past temps have been in the danger zone someone has gone back and read the rear bedroom gauge as a comparison.I hope to greatly expand on this type of info in the 04/06 club
John
