Did another benefit today, this one was for a guy with liver cancer and found out he's been working on an old MCI for several years, a little at a time. His wife is loosing her vision to macular degeneration or something like that and he is hoping to live long enough to take her on the circle tour around Lake Superior next year on memorial weekend, thats their wedding anniversary, I told him that if he feels well enough I'd be proud to drive them around the lake in our bus, I'm hoping for a miracle for them so he can keep his promise to her, sometimes a person needs a reason to live and it helps, it's just sad that we want to do things and life gets in the way and something happens to prevent it, I guess we never know whats around the corner so there can be a lot said for stopping "to smell the roses" while we still can.

I hope you get a chance to do this for them, also a trip round Superior will be beautiful, for you as well. I hope to do the same trip in my bus for my mother, before she gets to cranky/?? to travel with.

I've been around the lake several times, got friends on the north shore, it's a beautiful run, the north shore is far more rugged and wild than the south shore, north of Wawa at a town called Hawks Junction there is Revorts pool hall that has snooker tables, try shooting pool on one if you like to play golf, they got 12ft and better tables, another nice run is up to Lake Nipigon, very nice country. Several towns have Hudson Bay stores, nice to check out, also the Algoma railroad out of the canadian soo is a beautiful ride.

Dan -

I'd agree with Thomas on this one. If you've got the resources now to do it, I'd try to make the run this month, before winter sets in. "Fall Colors" tour, if you will.

W/ liver cancer, the fellow may not make it far into the new year.

FWIW & HTH. . .

:-)

Now was too late, john passed yesterday, quietly in his sleep, I didn't know them very well but they seemed to be nice people, I think we take for granted that we'll wake up each morning and put off calling that kid thats away at school or we say we'll stop and visit that aunt that is in the nursing home next week or when we have time, nobody can change the world but if we work to make our little corner a little nicer what a wonderful place this would be. Time is a very precious commodity to me, I've got parkinsons with onset MS and for a kicker have congestive heart failure,, I also have a very strong belief system and am hopeful that st peter will have a place for me when my time comes but in the meantime I'll do what I can to make things just a little nicer for somebody else,, it doesn't hurt any of us to pick up a plant at Lowes and set it on the steps of an elderly woman and walk away, it's not a big project to buy one extra newspaper and hand it to the old guy thats sitting watching the sun come up over the bay, did you know that the lady that brought you your coffee at the coffee shop is a single parent with 4 kids at home and works 2 jobs?, do you have an extra quarter to leave with the tip? We all have busy lives and things to do with places that we have to be, would any of this take too much time from that schedule?

All must be surprisingly well with the world this week, I didn't have any requests for a benefit for last weekend nor do I have any yet for this coming weekend, key word is yet tho, tomorrow I'll be at the nursing home with the big band cd's, I enjoy that and actually really like the music, there is something about a big band that actually knew how to play music, the drummers used to play from sheet music, I've never seen sheet music for a drummer but I'm sure it is interesting, even tho my mom passed last year I've kept the wednsday afternoon tradition going when I could, she used to enjoy it so much, even tho her althimerz (sp) had long ago robbed her of recent memories and she no longer knew any of us, she did know good music when she heard it and her foot would tap along with the beat. Then in november the christmas pics will start, thats where anyone that wants a pic done with gramma or grampa can get one done and it'll be sitting as an 8x10 0n their dresser in time for the holidays, for some of them it's the only contact they have with their families, sad but true how easy it is to forget about the ones we used to love so much when they get older, but we all lead busy lives and there is just so little time left for sitting uncomfortably while we try to figure out what to talk about with a person who doesn't even know who we are. Jamie told me of a statistic she read once where the volunteer rate is 300% higher at animal shelters than it is for nursing homes,, it saddens me to realize that even tho we all love our pets we can forget our families so easily, maybe my meds are turning my brain to mush but for some reason these things are important to me and hopefully might serve as a gentle reminder to maybe give a quick phone call to somebody you love just to let them know you're thinking of them from time to time. Speaking of meds,, I recently had a neru-stimulator wired in and it does wonders at controling the pain in my legs, MS isn't for wooses lol.

I wonder if you could carry the casket in your bus to the church and cemetery? Maybe a drive around the lake with his family? Just a thought.

Funeral is over, we went and paid our respects to the family,, they have 2 sons in afganistan that the military or red cross got home in time for it, they both are on 30 day leaves so she'll have some family around for a little bit anyway, was sad, he got diagnosed and it seemed didn't last very long but I'm finding out thats the nature of some cancers, very fast moving, we've got a good working relationship with the wounded warriors project and most fire departments know about us so I'm hoping for a quiet winter but I know otherwise,, I talked to a new bar that opened up only a few miles from us about picking up some music nights and got a favorable response,, we want to continue with the volunteer work but we also have to pick up some paying gigs to keep the bills paid. I really enjoy the benefits but reality is that cd's cost money and the truck gets thirsty so a night of just plain bar music now and then helps offset the other stuff.
