Is it ok to stay ovenight in the rest stops on I-5 between Bellingham Washington and Southern California? On our last trip down we noticed lots of truckers stopped, but not any rv's. Any reason for this?

As far as I know it is. I do, and so do many others. The nicest one is S. of Portland. I think just about every one of them are posted for 8 hrs. or so but I have never seen anyone rousted from them. I think the reason is the noise; a lot of people just can't cope with it. |

only real place you need to worry about is Florida rest stops...I drove big trucks all 48,only place I ever had to pull my pistol was New York & Florida....I am NOT picking on those states...the guy asked for an honest answer |

Florida now has guards at every Interstate Rest stop after dark - FYI "camping" is prohibited in Fla rest stops , but when parking becomes camping is a different ??????

I use the rest stops on I-5 regularly.
Never had a problem. However, if you get there late (after 10pm, for example) there will likely be no room.

it is very safe to park 'among' the truckers...just don't block them in where the can't get out.... |

We've o'nited a few times at the rest stop on the west side of I-5 just north of Corning, WA. Arrived around 6 - 7PM, left about 8 AM. No problems encountered.
Have also used a few Walmarts along I-5 in OR and CA.
If you need any servicing, Southern Oregon Diesel, north of Roseburg, OR is a good place to combine an overnight stop with getting any servicing done you might need. You can spend the night in their parking lot and plug in to a 30A receptacle. |

Best way to get to spend the night on I-5 rest stops is to tell the cop, who may want you to move, that you stopped for a bite to eat and had a couple of glasses of wine. You feel it would be unsafe, and illegal, for you to continue on. They will let you stay every time. |

I don't know how it is in other states, but in Massachusetts, if you're
the driver of a motor vehicle and you're in it, it doesn't matter if it's running
or not; If you've had a drink and you're in it, you'll be cited for DWI.
(or at the very least, detained for a breathalyzer and further testing).
That motorhome is a motor vehicle and I wouldn't tell an officer that
you've had as much as one glass of wine. |

That would make you guilty of DUI every time you had a drink or 2 ..... while anywhere in your 'home' on wheels - in Fla we have an open container prohibition which could put you in violation if you have any open alcohol inside the coach , but thankfully the policia have not gotten so militant as to yank people out of their RV's and haul them off to jail during 'cocktail hour'- sometimes common sense must prevail
