1985 Neoplan Cityliner
Allison 5 spd auto
currently fitted with a 6v92TA

Has anyone converted from a 6V92 to an 8V92???
Will the cooling system need to be changed?
I know that the driveline must be shortened and the trans and motormounts moved forward, I have room for this in the tunnel.

What other modifications will need to be made?

Is there a better swap???

Why do you feel the need to change to the 8V92?

The cooling system will have to be changed to meet the larger demand imposed by the 8V92.

Not necessarily so if you chose a 4 stroke diesel (but that would require a rear end re-ratio to a lower numerically, (higher gearwise) ring and pinion. These type of swaps didn't used to pencil out, but with rising fuel costs????

Live in a hilly area? What's driving the swap, an ego issue, a need to distract you from bars and fast women? (LOL!) [hill question was serious the rest just teasing]

When I first started chasing BC's I was all for 8V92 swaps, till Bob Belter and others' patient repetitions of common sense started settling my perceptions. Don't make any hasty decisions and asking your question was a "Good Thing" as Martha Stewart is now wont to say!

My alternator lost it's bearing which fell down into the gear train. Gears show pitting and wear, some made it inot the main bearings and ruined them. I am having the mains and rods replaced and the engine flushed out but the general consensus is that the gear train will need to be replaced before long.

The cost of replacment is greater than the cost of swapping in a good used motor and if I am going to put in another motor, I thought it might be time to add a few ponies as the cost of a 6 is equal to the cost of an 8. Nothing to do with Ego, as a matter of fact I was enlightened by MCIMarty and have abandoned my ego and become one with everything. I do live in an area with hills, mountains actually, Settle is prettymuch land locked with mountain ranges.

Going to a 4 stroke would really cost money would it not, you can find ex-military 8v92's for around $1700.00 and in the seattle area you can find good used motors for about $2500 - $3500 (about what I am paying to have my mains and rods replaced, and engine and trans service).

BTW Martha Stewart is comming out with a whole new line of prison cell accents, she really feels that the whole B&W stripe thing is "sooo last year".

If you go to the 8V92 military engine you will need to change the gear train if you are going to run the big altenator. The buses run a hardened gear train so you will buy a gear train eather way you go. If the military engine is high horsepower there will be other things to change. Might be easier to fix your's or find a good take out. you can E-mail me off line and we can talk.Don

if it was me...before you went on with the floorplan thing,I'd seriously look for an 'older' truck...VERY cheap nowadays, you could buy a very well maintained older truck for 5000,why older, welp you want one BEFORE the computers, will make a simpler instlation,ALSO,you will get the correct size radiator, correct (standard) trans. and correct (strong) rear end...lots of them have, alum. wheels (10) I'm not sure about your bolt pattern on a forien bus.

I talked with sam caylor earlier this year about this very same swap; an 8v92 out of another vehicle, in my case a fire engine, and into my 1983 nj transit mci 9.

The engine cradle needs to be reworked; sam can sell you one that will fit if you wish. the cooling needs to be upgraded; you need a set of the bigger blowers and bigger radiators to cool the 8v92. And you need a NON ddec 8v92. You want a mechanical 8v92, a double 00 or black, not a silver.

If you go ddec, you'll have to install a wire harness from scratch, and apparently this is a reasonably difficult job, and you'll need the gas pedal from the original installation. You can use your existing tranny, but you will probably want to take the opportunity to have it serviced while you've got the engine out.

you can sell the core for some price, but not much.

I like the idea of a bigger engine, but I'm saving my pennies for a wrecked DL3, figuring that a series 60 will pay for itself in better mileage and resale. Wrecked or burned dl3s are going for $22k (rear destroyed, no engine, no tranny, need to replace both) to $60k (front impact damage, engine and running gear ok)
