I just bought a 57 4104 with a 2/53 15kw generator
the genset also has a compressor I have been using the genset to run the pressure up prior to starting the bus engine because it smokes a bit when cold. I can get away from the campground without fogging the place. Is it bad for the bus engine to take off while still cold?

hey fellow bus nut i think with a gen that big you aught to put an electric motor in your coach and drive it electrictly just kidding fact of the matter is that running the engine is cumulatively bad for the engine but if you run it very easy when you are running it cold you should be all right my question is why doesnt the engine smoke just cause you have pumped up the air

If I understood the inference in his post correctly, I think he is just able to leave the campsite faster (still smoking while cold) by having the air suspension and brakes already up to pressure. . . and hence avoid angry campers throwing rocks and lawn chairs at him as he leaves them in a cloud of diesel fumes.

IF the gen set is a big one why not install a block heater.
Usually the coach will only smoke for a very short time if you give it a head start on warming up.

Diesels are VERY efficent at idle , so there is little excess heat to warm the engine.
Grinding away at Hi Idle only prolongs the amount of time damaging the engine thru low temps and high blow by.

BEST is to drive away as soon as the coach will move , at moderate speed.
Moderare is half throttle in second or third, or even high if the ground is level.

Wait for 140 F on the temp gage before attempting interstate , and then stay at 50 -55 till warmed up.

The least amount of time at any temp under "normal" is best for engine service life.
