Well, I can't believe it, but it was back in April that I announced here the purchase of our 1982 9. Of course, I couldn't let it bother me that, at that time, I had absolutely no place to put a 40' bus! It also did not help that during April, I was diagnosed with lung cancer and thought that we might see our dreams go out the window. Surgery on the 27th was successful and I'm now a very lucky survivor! Last week we found the perfect home with a wide, long driveway and the first thing we moved yesterday was the bus, of course!! Engine is a 6v92 with 740 Allison, cruise and we had NW Bus remove all seats but two fronts. It needs a turbo and badly needs tires. In fact, I drove 99 all the way home from Tacoma to Seattle because I would not go on the freeway with the rags which are on there. It airs up well, but can hear a leak which seems to be in the spare tire compartment. The other problem on the way home is the "not gen" light came on and stayed on for about half the trip. I do have "da book" and an operators manual. Would like to find a parts book (original). Thanks to all (especially locals) who have offered help and encouragement. I hope to be finished moving tomorrow and then the fun begins.Last night we crawled around in the dark with a roll of masking tape checking our cad drawings to make sure the floorplan would actually fit. All those moving boxes will be sacrificed for mockups! Any suggestions for the gen and air leak would be appreciated. My goal is to have the bus roadworthy in time for the July Bus N USA bash in Oregon. Obviously, it will become a big steel tent, but we will use this bus from the get-go. It will not get much driveway time. The tires are the real big issue, but if we need to drive our car down, we will be there! Best to all.. Michael Lewis |

Michael, You have joined a very exclusive club. Cancer survivors are a blessed group. I have been in remission for 7 years, and each day is a great gift. May you live long and enjoy your new bus. Gus Haag |

The normal behavior for a gen light is for it to go on at ignition, and stay on for a while, usually until the coach is aired up. There is a relay located in the rear of the bus, on the drivers side, in an electrical box. You get to it via the side door at the rear of the bus on the drivers side. The relay is a square plastic box with a wire keeper that keeps it in place. You can move the wire and pull the relay. Look at the center plastic post -- is it broken or cracked? If so, you'll need to replace it. they're about $30. While you're there, if you can't figure out which relay it is, pull them all, one by one, and inspect each one for the center post break. The relay can be functioning fine, but if that center post is broken, you'll get an intermittent connection, which could explain why the gen light went out after a while. Bruce / 83 njt mci 9. I'm in seattle, by the way. |

as far as the air leak in the spare compartment, there's a bunch of stuff on the roof of that compartment. An accessory air tank, your emergency brake plumbing, some coolant stuff for the air conditioning, any of which can leak. So get yourself a spray bottle of soapy water and pull the spare and start spraying. if you can heaer the leak over the sound of the engine, it'll be simple to find. I've had the best luck in buying random air fittings at fittings inc, on 4th avenue south north of boeing field by about 1/2 mile on marginal way. |

In the middle of moving from West Seattle to Tukwila. One more day and I can get to bus business. Fortunately, the wife won't let me lift too much yet, but have two healthy sons, so I'm doing a lot of pointing. Also gettin rid of a ton of stuff in anticipation of a move to full timing.. MIchael |
