While watching ebay I came across a rebuilt 8v71 selling for a starting bid of $3500, I watched the auction and to my amazement, not one person bid on it? Later the item was relisted with a "Buy it now" amount of only $4500...Not one bid? It was last at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7904621718 and the copy read "Bearings, sleeves, pistons, rings, radiator, environmental injectors, oil pump assembly, starter, 300 amp. alternator, and the blower has been completely overhauled and updated" Why has no one purchased this motor??? It just sounds like a great deal to me. I have been looking for a 6v92 for my rig and everything is in the $5000 to $7000 range for a "good" used motor. Chris PS. I have nothing to do with this motor or it's sale, just posting out of interest |

The main reason is that it is the 318. Everything I have ever heard was that the engine was grossly underpowered. |

calling it a 318 is a misnomer....without knowing exactly what injectors and timing, its hard to determine horsepower.. the 8v71's were known as 318's in the '1970's because that was the advertised hp in trucks available at that time... just like the 671 was known as a 238...the 8v71 is a good engine.. i've got 1 in a mci9... pulls good, runs out at 70mph... but compare it to the 8v92ta's, 3406 cats, and series 60's and it's doggy...but when it was popular, it ran against the 290 and 335 cummins and a-model 3406 cats...that's when having 400hp was a big deal....it's lost popularity in the wake of newer engines.. and there are lots of surplus 8v71's out in the market that run good, for less than $1k... in addition, you can find good running busses and trucks complete, with the 8v71 for less than $5k.... |

Mr Goodwin, while looking for diesel gensets I came across a classified website that also had some diesel engines. One was a 6V 92 silver, newly rebuilt with a turbo on it for $2500.00 asking price. I don't know where or who, but here is the website. WWW.usdieselengines.com/generator_inventory_brief.asp. I hope that address works. There were some Cummins and others listed also. HTH Ed. |

Rebuilt Marine Detroit Diesel 8v71. Capital 2.1 ratio gear included! $4000 This engine was removed from a Egg Harbor Yatch with less than 50 hours on it swince rebuild! The owner needs the space so this motor is priced to move! Write for more information or call toll free fob: Little Rock, AR - - price: $4000 I have no interest in this item and it is NOT EBAY.... Appears to be the same one that is listed on ebay. |

Mr.Jewett, I am currently in contact with US Diesel and had not mentioned it as I was hoping to keep this motor a secret until they took my payment LOL, such is luck and that you for pointing it out to me. The motor was supposedly rebuilt two years ago and had no miles. I have asked for an independant inspection and send an earnst deposit should everything check out. chris |

CJ DD engines come in two forms RIGHT TURNING engine and LEFT turning. The units can be either your application decides which you need. Some buses are right turning some are left turning. Unlike those german cars you work on which only come in one direction. |

if you don't know which is righhand or lefthand rotation you shouldn't give advise. fact #1 , rotation is viewed from the flywheel end dahh, thus making a clockwise rotation (righthand) necessary for transverse mounted engines i.e GMC 4905 |

If this engine is planned to go into a 4905 it had better be a left hand engine.>>>Dan |
