Doug, I've had several Generac units and had no problems. They are the Chevette of the generator world, and were sold in droves to the Y2K crew. Pull start 4KW is a bear, but the 5.5 elect. start was fine. My only complaint is the 3600 RPM motor speed, (lots of vibration) and the grossly inadequate exhaust system. Re-plumb the exhaust, set it on vibration dampening pads, add lots of sound deadening, and it will be fine. Cheers...JJ |

Genrac has been making other peoples alternator sections for decades before they came out with their own line of small stuff (they also made large industrial sets for many years). They are noisy, but as JJ says, that can be overcome. I had a Dometic (Genrac built) 4kw rv unit in my prev. mtr. home and it was a reliable unit that was quiet after I built the sound box for it to sit in. |

Generac makes several generators, including a diesel that is direct coupled, and runs at 1800. http://www.generac.com/ The typical generac RV generator is gasoline, has a vertical crank and generator, and are coupled with a belt. The difference in pulley size allows the two pole generator to run at 3600, and the engine to run at some od speed of 2500 or so. I have owned these, and the Chevette analogy sound about right to me. If you want a gasoline generator, I would hold out for an Onan. Mallie |

WHERE HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN? All the postings in the past have indicated GENERAC IS JUNK! Generac has quality control problems. Genrac windings corrode and fail. Generac has not been particularly helpful when it comes to warrentee work. Generac requires extensive opertional maintenance, even when the bus is stored, in order to keep it operational. This has all been posted in the past. The best place for a Generac Generator is at the end of a rope for a boat anchor. cd |

I am familiar with an incident command vehicle that has two 8K generac diesels in it. With somewhere around 1100 hours on both, between the two of them, there have been four instances of windings grounded, two boards fried, broken radiator mount that tipped the rad into the fan, and regular tripping of the run circuit breaker. And noisy, one smokes when the AC kicks in, and the starter crapped this past week in one of them. and yes, it was a low bid municipal contract type thing, so I guess I'm paying for it somehow.... I don't see a Generac in my personal future. happy coaching! buswarrior |

I just want to make sure they knew what their options were, Oh, by the way, the Generac Generator does'nt make a good boat anchor either, its too damn expensive, can pick up a real anchor cheap - so - the Generac Generator aint good for nothin - Cory Dane |
