Good answer FF on using the Genset/Block heater solution to prevent smoking up the camp ground. I will use that method. My onan could light up the entire camp ground. How about another engine temp Question? What is considered a normal DD6-71 temp and what is considered a high pull over and cool down temp for a 4104?

Another question. If temps reaches 200 and I pull over to cool engine, what is the best way to cool engine? Idle? Fast Idle? Shutdown? I would think shutting down would trap heat in engine. Thanks, Jack

If you have a block heater and need to pre-heat your engine you just plug into shore power for an hour or two before you leave. Also, a 1.5-2 HP electric air compressor will bring your air up so you have brakes. But, something that nobody mentioned is if your engine smokes then it needs work. A good running 6-71 Detroit will fire on half a turn of the starter with a tiny puff of smoke and run clean as it warms up.

For Jack-- the best way to cool an engine is to run it at fast idle to keep the coolant circulating through the radiator. 200F is at the upper end of operating temperature, at 205F it is time to pull over, 210F you may damage it.

Although it is true that loads of smoke on start up can mean low compression , old rusty cylinder bores , or rings that dont seal very well, there can be another explanation CALIFORNIA.

Some coaches used in CA or used as transits can have a different style of injector " for smog" , and they do smoke a bunch till the block gets up to temp.

Most of the N series are OK , but the C series injectors can blow smoke like a politician.
