I have a problem with my Trace 2512 inverter. The transfer switch is not working. It does not switch over to AC power with the generator, or plugged into AC power. Also the battery charger function is not working.(I have been told the charger function will not work if the transfer switch is bad.) The unit is still inverting power. The inverter is about 10 (or more)years old, and it was working fine prior to this problem. My question is, where do I get it worked on? Should I have it repaired, or replace it due to its age? If I replace it, what units seem to be the best for the money? Heart? Xantrex 858 ? Right now I'm thinking of replacing it so I do not have to do without it for an extended period, we plan on using the bus off and on for the next month or two. Then I can get it repaired and keep it for a spare, or sell it. Thanks JimCallaghan 4106 Wisconsin |

I would send it in and have it repaired and updated-- it is a top of the line pure sine wave inverter, the Heart would only be a modified sine wave. Henry knows someone who repairs and sells inverters (around Seattle). If he doesn't pop in several others (customers) on this board know who he is. --Geoff '82 RTS CA (W/ Trace 2512MC) |

Geoff, Thanks for the reply. The older Trace I have is not a pure sine wave, it is a modified sine wave with nearly identical specs to the ones sold today by Heart and Xantrex. I am new to the this type of set up, what I am trying to find out most is; Has the technology changed for the better or worse, or stayed the same in the last 10-15 years? Do these units wear out? If so, from what? Time?, Use? Abuse? Thanks Jim 4106 Wisconsin |

You must have a U2512, which was the original Trace inverter. It is a highly regarded inverter and the one Trace built their reputation on. Somehow I thought you had a SW2512. http://www.greatlakes-energy.com/2500-series.html |

Jim, Henry's friend in Edmonds, WA just sold two of his refurbished Hearts on eBay. I have no idea if he has more. An outfit in Florida had five of the same on eBay, but that auction also just ended. The going rate on the Combi 458 refurbished seems to range between $400 and $550, or around half of Camping World's new price. We had a Heart 2032 that blew its finals when it was 3 years old. Xantrex repaired it and it lasted another 4 to 5 years before it just quit. Xantrex will not repair ours or sell us another of the same voltage, so we are looking around ourselves. We've been finding that it's real hard to find everything under the hood that we've been wanting in one line, and the best are pretty expensive. I tend to think that its "you pays your money and you takes your chances". Good luck. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher |
