I am thinking about putting the generator where the existing coach air is in an 05 Eagle. I thought I would put sheetmetal and insulation around it. Good or bad idea?

Not being familiar with Eagles, I can't respond to the location, but sheet metal (or other fireproofing) is required by code and dictated by common sense. As to inslulation, several options ranging from lead sheet sandwiched between foam layers (from Soundown, Inc, Marblehead, MA) to the finger type foam to.....on and on and on... Try to route the combustion and generator (the electrical portion) cooling air through some kind of duct so there isn't a direct path to the outside. A path like that makes the best insulation useless.

I have a 05 and put a 12.5KW Powertech gen in that area. Boxed in with sheet metal and reflective insulation used for engine compartments. Air from the radiator fan on mine is drawn in from the engine and discharges forward though the radiator. I built a box around the radiator and it discharges into the engine battery box area below the battery. I put a sheet metal bottom below the generator so the hot air won't mix with the cooler air coming in. It has worked just fine for 800 engines hours of operation.
