My 4104 is hard starting. Probably my batteries are getting near the end of their life. I find using a rechargeable portable jumper to the hot side of the starter solenoid adds enough to really get it spinning and it fires right off |

Before you trash the old batteries try cleaning all the wire lugs, and check the alternator output. |

bobm, Unfortunately many failed starters can be directly attributed to bad batteries kept long beyond their useful life. Deacon has a point too, corrosion on battery posts and cables rob significant power. A jumper on the solenoid might get you going in a pinch, but keeping your starting system healthy in the long run requires good batteries and good connections. Brian |

The very first thing to clean is the ground post and coach connection to the ground. If you can measure the volts at the starter , there should be at least 9V while cranking. If the voltage is OK BUT IT STILL SPINS SLOW , you could try removing the solenoid on the starter and cleaning or replacing , or installing backwards (new surface) the contact washer. A complete starter rebuild will run about $250, about the price if 2 8D starting batts of fair quality. FAST FRED |

Good guidance. I would place emphasis on the ground cable to bus connection, seems it gets ignored and often is a source of the problem. |

also on your 4104 you might have the old type starter that has the exposed link to the bendix throw in arm if so thing about changing it to the newer type that are on the v model dd engines. you may have to changethe nose cone to the 12 hole type from the 6 hole type that are on these starters, and the other fellows are right on , clean the ground connections. |
