I have had the front wheel seals replaced twice now and they are leaking again. I have heard to switch to grease type instead of the oil filled. In doing this do i need to change the bearing or just use a different type seal? |

maybe you aren't using an oil seal now. I changed our 4104 over to Mobil synthetic grease that is semi liquid/solid, front and rear. For all the more we use our coaches and the amount of time they sit, I don't want to deal with oil soaked brakes issues. You lose a lot of stopping power with a non working set of shoes. Cleaning up the mess is quite a chore.Have the spindles checked for wear grooves where the bearing inner race rides against the steel spindle surface.Picture/part number of your seal? Oil seals, at least some, have the seal internal like Stemco and others, which many otr trucks use.Have someone check your leaking seal number; maybe your coach didn't have oil seals from the factory. |

Cory, Your bus is a MC-8 right? If I remember right, the 1979 MC-8 that I worked on a few years back came factory with oil filled hubs. I have stemco seals and wiper rings on my bus and haven't had a leak so far (about 15,000 miles) Like already mentioned, you might check for any wear and maybe for loose bearings. Or go to grease packed system like you are asking. But I really think there is something going on to cause all the leaks. " It truly is a good system if all is well! " I will probably get beat down for that statement? Good luck |

Cory Check around as on my GM there is a two part seal where the seal part moves with the spindle in the event of minor bearing wear and the outside part seals the hub. Any large seal or bearing supplier should be able to line you up with the correct part. Like also mentioned check the spindle for wear grooves. Bill |

The left front on my 5A leaked oil. Upon disassemble, and investigation I found an grease ring on my oil lubed spindle. NAPA supplied me with the proper part the next day and I've had no problem since. Ed |

If there is a wear groove on the spindle where the seal rides, you can get a very thin sleeve that slips over the spindle, installed with a special tool, that the standard seal rides on. Or you can shim the seal, or possible get a special seal with the lip in a different place. http://www.vsm.skf.com/en-US/HeavyDuty/KitsAndTools/SpeediSleeve.aspx Brian |

Hi Cory & Folks: On your MC-8 as well as on the GM front spindles is a wiper that the seal rides on. I believe most parts books refer to it as a spacer. Same for rear axle tubes. Over time, the seal will wear a groove in the wiper, which can be removed and replaced. We do it quite frequently in our shop. I hope this HELPS!!! Happy & SAFE!! bussin' to All. LUKE at US COACH |
