While having a few years (1980) of experience with pc's, desk tops of many sorts and the room size Remington and IBM systems of the past mid century...(good grief!!!!!), I am a spanking new user of the notebook....just acquired an HP Pavillion last week....

On the way across the desert to Alamogordo today, my wife opened the computer in our Olds Alero to do a bit of bookkeeping on her Pampered Chef business and......walla....no picture. Must have been just too bright to see it, as when she put a covering over the top, there it was...a good picture.

Question:

Is this a) normal b) changable) c) an impossible situation and we should just revert to a desktop and monitor for use of a GPS program in the coach?

A couple of weeks ago we crashed our desktop via an email virus and lost three drives. Was considering a second laptop in lieu, but now, perhaps should reconsider.

Comments from the experts appreciated. :)

Thanx,

I don't like to point out the obvious, but as the proud owner of an HP laptop, I can offer this.. they will revert to a lower brightness when on battery power. This can be changed by pressing the FN key at the same time as the 2 key (I think.. it has a sun like icon in blue on it).

I have used my laptop(s) many times for navigating and surfing in sunlight, and while you do need to provide a bit of shade, have had no problems...

Hope this helps!

As noted above, many laptops dim when on bats. Usually you can override this with a function key. Also some laptops just have better screens than others. I like IBM Thinkpads, personally. But even the best LCD display in direct sunlight is hard to see. You could make a cardboard eyebrow for it. Might help when the sun is at an angle.

I have not seen a laptop of the past few yrs. with this severe of a problem. In fact, even in the era before svga & uvga tft screens, they were generally viewable in every lighting condition just by changing the viewing angle. But, some LCD's are not very good quality. I have an Olympus digital camera with a 3" LCD viewfinder and no thru the lens viewer which is absolutely impossible to use in bright sunlight, regardless of what angle to the sun you stand. Takes terrific pics and has all the bells and whistles, problem is, you just never know exactly what your taking a picture of! To my good fortune, I have to admit that I won it as a door prize at a Converted Coach Chapter rally, otherwise I would have taken it back to where it came from. If u want a truly great LCD display, regardless of application, look for Samsung.

LCD screens used as remote monitors in filming always had a shade taped to them, some just made of black cardboard, others aluminum. About 8" at the top with sides that tapered to about 3" at the bottom. Saw many held in place with Velcro and even saw one where the shade panels could be folded on top the screen when closed and held in place with velcro. Should be an easy fab.

I use the Laptop in the RV all the time and have not had the problem with seeing the screen unless the sun is directly on it.

I don't use the battery for power, it is grossley inefficient and has no lasting power. I have an adaptor that plugs into the cigar lighter plug and the other end plugs into the Laptop.

In an RV there is plenty of vehicle to block the sun from hitting the screen, as for the screen cutting to low power, my screen is adjusted to low power even when on house power so I can't tell the difference. As I said, I have never had a problem with seeing the screen. This is crucial since if you are driving, you can only afford to "GLANCE" at the screen, the copilot can take all the time in the world.

I travel with the laptop GPS so much that I never open the atlas anymore.
