Today I saw a Gillig by the road for sale. Naturally I had to stop and look. It is a 1966 single axle model. The transmission is a 6 speed Allison. And the engine is a 6V??NA. Does anyone know if it is a 92 or 71? The seller didn't know.

One other odd thing. It had the disk from a TruStop parking brake on the end of the transmission but the caliper assembly was missing.

Where was the engine?

If if was mid-ship under the floor, it was probably an inline 6-71.

If it was a pusher, and being that vintage, it could easily have been a 6V71, unless it's been repowered.

6-speed Allison??? Was it an automatic or a stick-shift? I don't think Allison built six-speed automatics back in 1966.

Seller really needs to do his homework better, IMHO. . .

I would agree about the mid-ships engine being most likely a 6-71 but if it is a rear engine it most likely is a 6V-53.

If it is an Allison 6-speed it is most likely an Allison HT-70 transmission.

If it has the Tru Stop parking brake on the driveline it most likely was a California spe'c bus. If most of the guts are missing it most likely is because the updated spring brake works so much better and without the guts you can't drive off with the driveline brake dragging.

If the price is right and the bus is in good condition it might make someone a pretty nice platform for a chicken coop. A 6V-53 defines a screaming Jimmy. It makes a -71 series powered bus sound quiet in comparison.

Yeah, the parking brake located on the driveshaft is the key item here. This would mean that the mill is probably...

...in the middle of the coach located under the floor. I do not think there would be enough room on the driveshaft...

...for a parking brake if the mill was located in the rear of the bus, but then again I could be wrong too.

If the mill is admidships, then yeah, it is probably a pancake Detroit 671N. The Allision is probably the HT-70 6-speed automatic...

...with the overdrive 6th gear. But...Gillig did make some rear engineed models in this time frame also. Good luck.

Sorry to cause confusion. It is a rear engine bus. The engine is definitely a V. The six speeds are what it says on the shift consol.

The engine does look nice........green and clean. There are the usual oil drips underneath. It did start right up and did not smoke.

So how do you tell a 53 from a 71? The seller said he didn't know.....used car lot.

Thanks

look at the valve covers.... '53's bolt down around the edges...like a small block chevrolet....'71's bolt down with 2 big bolts, right in the middle of the valve covers... older 1's have a handle like a water faucet... newer 1's have 12pt bolts...

Also the valve covers on a '53 Detroit are actually larger and flatter than the covers on a '71 or '92 which are slightly more rounded.

Yeah, probably a 6V53 Detroit, which non-turboed, would give around 200 hp and around 400 pounds of torgue at 2800 and 1800 rpm.

Tranny is probably the smaller MT-60 (I think) which had 6 gears also with 6th being an overdrive. Sorry about the Bo Bo.

Thank you one and all. I will take another look at it. Tommorow I have to get a new (to me) crankshaft pulley for my 8.2. The rubber is disintegrating.....harmonic damper I guess.

Don't sell the 6V53 short. I have one in my dump truck and while it is a screamer at speed, it does announce to the world "Psycho driver is on the loose! Get out of the way!"

The series 53 can wind up to 2800 rpm and stay there all day, something that isn't good for a 71 or 92.

It's almost hard to believe that big old lump of cast iron displaces only 318 cubic inches and makes 400 foot/lbs of torque.
