When I was a kid we had a volkswagen beatle. The mechanic that did the service work on it was adamant about washing the engine on a regular basis. My question is, can you wash a diesel engine? If so, how? I thank you all in advance for your answers. |

Simple green in a spray bottle is $8.00 a gal at HD. A small brush helps to work it in,& loosen stuff you should have used a putty knife on. FAST FRED |

Better still is Castrol Super Clean. Gets it clean enough to paint. BAD for aluminum, it eats it so don't get it on the exterior. Also not good to breath. Get it at Walmart, its purple. Jim |

Gunk and simple green works fine but can take forever, if you can use or rent a steam cleaner... I have about three hours of steam cleaning time in my 8V71, I shudder to think how long it would have taken to clean it otherwise. Brian |

Be careful with steam or pressure washers you can wash the grease out of a couple places like the throw out bearing |

I agree with Jim Ashworth, the Castrol is the best I've ever seen. If left on some things overnight it will remove the paint. My brother left some in a spray bottle that had originally been bathroom cleaner. It ate thru the spray bottle and drained over the side of my Lincoln welder. It ate the paint off the welder much like paint remover. I cleaned my 6V92 with it when i got it home, I even cleaned the radiator. It did a wonderful job. |

I use plain old kerosene.Spray it on a warm engine let it set awhile and hose it off. The heavy spots you may want to scrape and brush a little. Works for me. |

Of course, you should know the reason why you should periodically wash an engine. |

Is it better to wash the engine cold or warm? |
