I'm looking at 3 stage regulator for 12v "House" system. I'm thinking about 200 amps or so for the alternator. I'm Planning on running one roof air off 3k inverter while going down the road. 6 Trojan T-105'house batts. Can anyone reccomend an alternator that will work with this regulator? Whats a "P" type alternator? And if this isnt a regulator thats suited to that application, point me in another direction? Xantrex MODEL # 84-2006-01 Regulates 12 volt P-Type Alternators Designed for mobile power applications, the Xantrex Alternator Regulator (Part #84-2006-01) turns a high output alternator into an intelligent source of charging. Multistage regulation provides optimal charging voltage for common battery types including flooded, gel, AGM and Optima batteries. With optional alternator and battery temperature sensors installed, the Xantrex Alternator Regulator protects against heat stress on the batteries and alternator, while maximizing charging performance. Start delay and soft ramp features reduce belt and engine wear, and the Amp Manager function adjusts the maximum alternator output. Product Features! - Selectable charging programs for gel, AGM , and optima deep-cycle flooded batteries - User programmable system time and voltage values - Equalization mode - Color coded LED display - Industry standard wiring harness and detailed installation instructions - Encapsulated for resistance to marine environment |

I have one of them on a 145A alternator. P type is externally regulated. It works well to recharge the house batteries quickly. On startup, it does go into bulk charge mode, whether the batteries need it or not so I put a switch on the dash to turn the alternator off when not needed. Check with a local auto electric place (starter/alternator shop). They will know which alternator you need and be able to get the right pulley for it. The crankshaft pulley on Prevost and MCI 8V##'s is an 'A' or 'B' belt pulley. You need to use the smaller 'A' belt because of the small diameter pulley needed to spin the alternator. The 'B' belt minimum pulley diameter is about 6". Jim |

Most of these 3 stage charge-regulators can handle 8A field current. That means it will operate your stock coach , nice big alt. FAST FRED |

Are you going to be on the road long enough and often enough to justify the extra cost of the three stage regulator? I just went through this decision Monday when my old regulator quit. A new generic one was $55 with tax and shipping. The three stage is primarily to protect the batteries when on the charger for many hours or days. I don't drive that long, usually only a few hours a day, if at all. |
