We are thinking of dropping Dish Network in the coach and cable in the house and going with DirecTV for both. Has anyone on the board signed up recently with DirecTV. Is the free installation really free, or do you have to pay for the wire etc. Any tips or words of wisdom about DirecTV would be appreciated. |

Hi George, I don't know any details about current promotions, but RG6 coax is pretty inexpensive and it is usually included in installation. I know that for fact for satellite Internet installations, and presume it to be true for TV too. I have DirecTV with a TiVo Receiver. DirecTV suits me fine. Check and see if you can score any promos to get a cheap PVR. A PVR (personal video recorder) such as TiVo changes the whole traditional TV experience of watching TV according to a set schedule, into watching what you want, when you want. Scott |

There are comercials about signing up with DirectTv and they give you the dish and receiver. I don't know if you can find it much cheaper than that. I have D-TV and use it when I travel. I have the normal house subscription. When I travel I take the box with me, I have a portable dish which is a breeze to aim. The only thing you will be lacking is the telephone connection for purchasing movies but you can call that in on the phone if you like. My suggestion is, if you are getting it for the weather channel when it is storming, also have a normal antenna as the satilite will black out during heavy storms. I got rid of that "Piggy" cable 10 years ago and I have never looked back. Good Riddance!!!!!! Good luck George "Imagine" cd |

If you tell them it's only going to be used in an RV and fill out the form you can download here: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/learn/dns_vehicles.dsp you can get both the east and west networks for a few more bucks per month. You will not get any "promos" when you do this, but you will not have to sign into any long-term contract either. To get those "free" boxes and dishes, you sign up for a minimum amount of time and they whack you good if you don't pay to full term of the contract. You can't get that "promo" for free units and change to an RV package later. Once the unit's being used in a home, you are not entitled to receive the east and west combination. Having both network areas pays off. Wifie misses the soap at 2pm; she sees it again at 5pm. Watch the east coast before anyone else sees it if you're on the west coast... It's handy and I'd hate to do without it. And...... you can always put the receiver in the house when you're not traveling. I wouldn't go telling 'em, however. |

:::Wifie misses the soap at 2pm; she sees it again at 5pm. Watch the east coast before anyone else sees it if you're on the west coast... That is the beauty of getting a TiVo satellite reciever. All in one box so clean install for an RV. And now you can watch whatever you want at any time of day or night. Just tell it to record every episode of such and such show, then you can come back later and watch one per week, or sit thru a whole marathon of shows in one sitting, all on your own schedule. Also, the wifie can watch her shows while you drive even when the dish is down, if you have them saved up on TiVo. You can tweak it to program a remote button to do a 30 second FF skip which makes an hour long show full of comercials condense down into about a 45 minute time frame. Good for freetime-deprived people. If I were ordering sat receiver(s), I would seriously consider a TiVo version. OK, coming off my soap box now. Scott |

Not a bad soapbox Scott! But if you're driving at 2pm while that soap is on, no "TiVo" in the workd will help you save it. (Well, not unless you're going to buy a automatic dish setup (more $$$$) that follows the sat automatically while you're rolling?) So while my wifie watches the program she missed at 5pm because I was busy driving at 2pm, the TiVo wifie will remain making no promises to the TiVo hubby. (har har) |

DISH Network vs. Direct TV: Same dog, different spots. DISH was offering free equipment and install just a few months ago and will do so again. Direct is recently taken over by Murdock and will get very competitive until such time as they garner more market share--then watch out and there will be no more freebies from them. While both services will offer good deals to NEW customers, they offer very little to existing, such as pay full MSRP for upgrade equipment such as HDTV recievers. Take your pick: whichever one u choose will tweak you sooner or later. And, since Direct put their new satellite on line, it is no easier to aim a full service receiver dish than DISH, which has always been a pain for mobile users without auto tracking, and even they experience a lot of problems. |
