Hey Guys,
I'm looking to buy a shell to convert into a band bus. My Question is am I better off with a 70's 4905 or a 4104 ? For my price range these seem to be whats available. I've heard the 4104 is easy to maintain and economical to run. How does it compare to the 4905. Any info would be greatly apreciated. Thank You.

Joe -

First, take a look at the pics of the two models off of BNOs main page:

http://www.busnut.com/busstop/

Scroll down to the GMC group, and look at the two you're interested in.

Main differences (4905 listed first):

~ 40' vs 35'
~ 300+ cu.ft. basement vs 220 cu.ft.
~ 8V71 w/ 275 hp vs 6-71 w/ 238 hp (Original stock engines)
~ 6-8 mpg vs 9-10 mpg
~ AT available vs major surgery for AT install
~ Longest wheelbase of any 40' coach ever built (and longer than some of the new 45-footers, too!), yet virtually the same turning radius as the 35' 4104.

HTH, and good luck!

4905/4104
The P8M4905A has Sheppard Power steering that is a plus.
Parts avaliblity is better for a P8M4905A.
Some P8M4905A coaches came with a V-730 Allison automatic transmission was a (option)from GMC.
In some ways the P8M4905A was way ahead of the MCI coaches it it's time period.
Now for the PD4104.
Don't sell the 4104 short they are a fine bus also.
Power steering was a option.
No automatic transmission was offered by GMC as a option.
Some 4104 parts are getting harder to find.
But are avaliable if you have the funds.
I have owned both a 4104 first and I now own a P8M4905A.
I am quite happy with the P8M4905A and yes I would buy another GMC P8M4905A instead of a MCI of that year ventage.

For a band bus the huge storage bays on a 4905 can't be beat by any other 40 ft bus. The ride is great. Last of the 4905 series was built in 1980, so parts should be easier to obtain.
