I was going to go the generator route , But since I was going to pick up a trace 4024, Why not get two 4024's and put together a little pony engine to drive two or there alternators. To run HVAC and charge the batteries etc. when not on shore power. I know someone has done this already.( I would think) How reliable do you think it could be. How would one regulate two or more alternator to one battery bank. Just thinking out loud. Thanks Kent H. 4905 |

Sounds great but why more than one alternator? I have seen some up to 250 or 300 amps per. should be ok. |

The big advantage of a DC genset is it can easily be load regulated , run at full throttle IF full power is needed , but much less rpm & noise & stink when less power is needed. Gone is any worry over volts or frequency drop under load , the inverter is really clean juice. Best of all is the bat bank can be charged directly from the noisemaker , so a large bank will not take as long to fill as would with a battery charger and home made AC. The bearings in an alt made for belt drive will probably last longer than those made for PTO mounting , if your going to be using a belt setup. FAST FRED |

I have a 65 amp alternator driven by a 5hp briggs and stratton that I use in case I run the bateries down. In a few minutes I can have the batteries up enough to start the generator. Simple skid type metal frame mount with a rheostat and amp guage. |

In reference to the Xantrex Trace 4024, you need to know that the new model electronics had been reconfigured. The old Trace 4024 has more controls that would be more appealing for the mobile use. The new Trace 4024 (I think they call it the 4024_2) was scaled back as per electronic controls. This link takes you to the page for the manual, at the bottom of the page is the book for the Trace 4024 2 ( the new unit ) http://www.aaaffordablesolar.com/2.html This link takes you to the page for the old unit (still available ) http://www.xantrex.com/support/docserve.asp?id=315 The differences should be appearant. I found the original unit to have better controls for what I needed versus the new unit that had the controls removed. Also, the newer unit needs a lot of extra items purchased if you want them to work, the older has most of them included. good luck "Imagine" cd |
