Two calls for help, hollering into the empty wilderness, on the DieselChat in the last week:

Larry B: I have aMCI-5Bwith an 8v71 and a four speed manual trans. I am in process of installing jake brakes. First time for me at this job. An sugestions for do's and don'ts would be appreciated. I have downloaded a copy of installation manual from Jacobs. Most of all I don't want the pistons and valves shaking hand when jakes are activated. What rpm do you run engine when testing system?

Larry B: I am in the process of installing jake brakes on an 8v71 in an MCI-5B converted bus. I have downloaded jacobs installation manual, but it does not say at what rpm to run the engine when testing the exhaust brake on shop floor before road test. I am looking for advice from anyone who has done the install themselves. Any other advice so that when I send electric current to the solinoid the first time the piston and exhaust valves don't shake hands witheach other would be much appreciated. Thanks Larry

happy coaching!

You better have more than just the Jakes manual the bridges and valves need to be adjusted to the DD manual.
Never turn the engine with the starter before checking all clearances use a 1 1/2 in socket on the crank or cam drive.
Did you install new bridges ? and you have those set at.015 under both sides.
You need to walk us through what you have done and your settings it needs to be right before you fire it off or it can cost you.
Is the engine A timed or std did you use 71/92 housings or 71 housings

good luck

My MC-5C manual from MCI has an extensive section on installing and adjusting Jake brakes. As noted there are a number of things that need to be adjusted, in the right order - valves, injectors, bridges, finally clearance between the jake slave and the bridge to .064" (per my manual) with valves closed. You have to install the buffer switch and adjust it. Lots of steps.

Testing is easy. With everything hooked up and the engine warmed up, with engine stopped push the engine stop lever to the stop position and the buffer switch should operate energizing the Jake solenoids. Test with a test light. The buffer switch closes when the rack is in the no-fuel position. Next, run the engine at idle. With the Jake switch on, rev the engine to 1500 rpm or so, and snap the throttle closed. The governor goes to no-fuel, the buffer switch should close, you should hear the Jake rattle as the engine decelerates, it may stall. As soon as the engine is decelerated the governor should recover to idle and the buffer switch will open and it should return to a steady idle.
