Has anybody got real experience with buying their own container (20') and having it moved? We are finalizing our escape from Ny plan and i want to be able to load our stuff at our leisure and then have the container picked up and hauled to Pa. This wont be household stuff but my shop tools and parts etc. This way i can load and unload on my schedule (after work and after selling and moving)I can get one for $500-700 but havent checked into the logistics of transporting it yet. bus parts will be involved to keep it bus related. ;) thanks dave

Go to Pods.com. After being a professional cross country furniture mover for 15 years, this is the system I would use. Good Luck, TomC

We rented a 30ft container when we moved from Maui to the Seattle area. Shipping was included, don't remember the cost, that was 13 years ago. :>)

pods is expensive. i did 10 ft of space with them and it was $2500 or so 6 years ago. i say buy a container then have it trucked or if it is only 20 feet get one you can put on a trailer and tow it to pa.

Go to a TNT magazine; they list containers in there all the time.

Thanks everyone. My daughter used a moving company similar to pods and it worked well but i am not going to be doing everything over a weekend. I thought about putting the container on my 5 ton trailer (for about a minute! haha) What i need to do is check on trucking costs to get it over the bridge and off the island, that and loading/unloading or winching it on and roll off.We are still slowly moving everything one 8'truckbed and 8'trailer at a time. Dori is not real keen on me aquiring more storage area haha.

Old Dominion Freight Lines or ABF Freight has a program where they park a pup in your drive, you fill it up, they then deliver it. You do it on your schedule.

Dave,
Sojourner purchased a 40' container for, I think, about $1500. It had a couple small leaks that we repaired. He filled it with his tools and equipment. A flatbed semi arrived and 2 local wreckers picked it up and the flatbed was backed under it. I don't know know the cost or how they unloaded the container in SC. Jack

Keep on the lookout for an old U-Haul truck, they still have the loading ramp installed. Sell it at the other end.

My nephew drives for AB Freight. They do a lot of the short trailers. I believe there is a time limit to load and unload, like two weeks at each end.
