Winter has arrived here, the snow has been falling and accumulating, forecast is for snow each day for the next several days at a rate of 6 to 12 inches per day, we'll end up with between 350 and 450 inches before spring appears again. As usual I didn't get everything done that I had wanted to do but enough is done to get thru the winter with some level of comfort, the bus is winterized and maintainers are on the batteries. I have several tons of coal set aside and enough wood, the new wood/coal stove is in front of the fireplace and piped into the chimney and it's got a nice bed of white hot coals that are toasting the cats nicely, they have already picked out their favorite spots to sleep around it so that meant cleaning off the mantle to allow for room for them to stretch out. I brought in my grandparents kalamazoo kitchen wood stove and thats set up in the dining room, hooked into an unused chimney,, it'll come in handy during the times that the electricity fails and the roads are plugged, there are no school age kids in this direction now so the county plows don't work as hard to keep the roads as clear as they would if a school bus were on them, often I've had the driveway cleared out to a 2ft to 4ft layer on the road that stays for a week or more before the county gets to them but with a snowmobile thats only slightly inconvienent. By the middle of january the snow will be level with the windows on the iggle and life will slow down to a nice comfortable crawl, the deer yard up below the house and it's nice to watch a hundred or more gathered until they move deeper into the swamps, the moose will become more regular visitors and human contact will be electronic or the occasional visit. Life is good. |

It's not so bad, I can do pretty much what I want here including shiver lol. I don't have any HOA's telling me what color to paint my front door and I can even pee off the front porch if I want,, the winters here are somewhat brutal at times but the summers more than make up for it, not many places allow a person the freedom to actually live as they choose and as cheaply as they want, property taxes are a killer tho, last year they were almost 400 dollars. I guess it's all in what you want, if a person requires a McDonalds on the corner and a walmart across the street then this isn't for you but if you ever watched a grizzley adams show and liked it, then we got room for a few more people in the upper penninsula as long as you keep the noise down. In the spring the rivers will again open up and be full of fish for the rainbow run and the lakes will have little rafts of ducklings and geese floating around and the lake trout will be biting, they range in the 5 to 60 pound class so they can be fun too, we've got plenty of areas where you can walk along the beach under the pines for miles without seeing another persons footprint, if you like panning gold thats here too, or float copper chunks that weigh in at several tons, there arn't too many places where you can still watch a 10ft sturgeon laying in the shallows or go blueberry picking around a homestead dating back to the 1850's, I've got a trappers shack on the back of my property that dates back to the 1830's with white pines next to it that are 8ft on the stump. Like I said, this is living good. No poisonous snakes, the mosquito's ate them but plenty of other critters from timber wolves to moose to bears and chipmonks. |

The skeeters are our storm early warning system when you see them walking cause they can't fly with their long johns on it's time to bring another armload of wood in the house. |

,,,,Here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about the U.P of Michigan... *If your local Dairy Queen is closed from August through May, you may live in Da U.P. *If someone in a Gun Shop offers you assistance and they don't even work there, you may live in DA U.P. *If you've worn shorts and a jacket at the same time, you may ...live in DA U.P. *If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone... who dialed a wrong number, you may live in DA U.P. *If "vacation" means going anywhere below the bridge for the weekend, you may live in DA U.P. *If you measure distance in hours, you may live in DA U.P. *If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you may live in DA U.P. *If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C' in the same day and back again, you may live in DA U.P. *If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you may live in DA U.P. *If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both doors unlocked, you may live in DA U.P. *If you carry jumpers in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you may live in DA U.P. *If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you may live in DA U.P. *If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph -you're going 80 and everybody is passing you, you may live in DA U.P but cussing out all the damn tourists . *If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow, you may live in DA U.P. *If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction, you may live in DA U.P. *If you have more miles on your snow blower than your car, you may live in DA U.P. *If you find 10 degrees "a little chilly", you may live in DA U.P. *If you actually understand these jokes, repost this so all of your YOOPER friends and others can see, you definitely do live or have lived in DA U.P |

The trouble is, most of those fit with my old stompin' grounds too. Fargo and Duluth.... My wife was amazed when we moved to Fargo because Walmart had a parking lot that was larger than any other 5 Walmarts added together that she'd ever seen. She asked why it was so large and I told her to just wait. This went on for months, until we came back from a 9 week trip on the road and it was January. The parking lot was packed with piles of snow 20' high and only a small parking place was left for cars. Walmart plowed all the snow into huge piles that took until late June or early July to melt. |

Cody, I am sure glad you love it but too many years of racing motorcycles and sharing roads with drunks has left me with bones that just can't stand much cooler than 40 degrees. Enjoy your snow, I'll send you a postcard from the US Virgin Islands in a few weeks. |

I love it in the summer, I get by in the winter, my ideal winter is sitting in the bus in tennessee or florida but with 2 kids in medical school and being retired it's not so easy to fund a trip south, I know all about the achey bones,, I've got the perfect foursome, parkinsons, onset MS, congestive heart failure and liver damage from my heart meds so I know what your saying, my goal here is to turn this over to the kids and only keep a few acres for my own use where I can have a cement pad and hookups for the bus for summer use and then head south for the winters but that has to wait till jamie gets done with school but for now I do enjoy looking out the window at the snow. |

Dan. From the above description are you sure you don't live here in Alberta? We got about 6 inches of snow yesterday and I got to spend about 5 hours in a very deep ditch waiting for a winch truck to come pull me out. I was not alone I had the company of 4 other vehicles in the same ditch. No damage and no injuries (except to pride for winding up there in the first place) |

Still storming here, supposed to break tomorrow tho at some point lol, no point in cleaning up snow until it slows down long enough to move it, most are prepared for it tho, we've learned a long time ago to keep the wood box full and the kitchen stocked, mostly we just hunker down and wait it out, sure is pretty outside tho, I enjoy sitting and looking at the tree's covered, hopefully we won't loose power, I'm not power dependant but it is convienent, biggest problem I've got is the satalite dish has a layer of snow and it's messing up the signal, why doesn't it affect the shopping channels, only the ones I want to watch are gone and I'm not about to climb on the roof and sweep off the dish, at least not tonight, looks like I got the bus winterized in time. |

Chromie You have no idea what it is like here when the weather decides to go from well above freezing to well below. The roads get so slippery that just standing up on them is a challenge. This was the first time that I bought a ditch in a very long time, I have no desire to repeat the experience soon. |

I can well appreciate the weather roller coaster, our storm just broke and the sun is coming out, now they are claiming that the temps should hit the mid 50's on thursday with a slow decline after that, from snow to slush to soup to freezeup again, but thats november here, very changeable, when december hits it'll be a lot less changeable and a lot more white out. |

Well guys for once I'm feeling lucky to be living in sunny warm Montreal. Winter is barely nipping about, going down to -4 C tonight for the 1st time this fall. The winters have been mild recently, and the fall has seemed like fall well into December, I like the quiet of a warm house in a snow storm, and much as I| will curse this winter if anything breaks outside that needs to be fixed outside, it really is a refreshing season and it sure builds character |

Thank you, Jim. I plan to (it's ~83 degree F. every day in Feb -- but don't go in December, that's rainy season and some days it's only 79). |

Someone needs to add gear oil to this whining thread before it burns itself a bearing or 2. Drink some of that Sterno before you burn it all for heat & you won't notice the cold or that''s what the Swedes told the Finn's in Mini-Soda anyway... worked for them ! Well here is news for some of you... Tucson is NOT Eden or Palm Springs ! This was our welcome to "StinkinHot" when we arrived in Jan - '87...... Imagine how this affected a town where people don't drive when the streets are WET...! Of course it was easy to spot the transplanted Northerners on the street, they are the ones who brake for green lights & yard sales. Pro's that they are..... |

Well the coach is winterized, the lawn tractors are in the machine shed, I'm about to attach the snow-blower to my small John Deere and my Skidoo has its trail pass on it and is parked facing toward the nearest trail. There's no frost in the ground. It was +11 C (52 F) yesterday. I don't expect any serious snow for some time to come. I guess I'll have to haul myself and the Skidoo somewhere north to get any serious use out if it. |
