If u are a dry camper in the wilderness, separate grey is the way. Some places allow grey dumping on the ground. I have stayed in many parks that requested that I dump my grey on the grass (I have separate tanks). A single tank is usually an easier installation and cheaper to do. I think size is just as important of an issue. I just don't understand these people that put in these monster tanks(150-200 gallon) and haul all that s*** around when they are at most 2-3 days away from a dump station. |

JMaxwell, Could not agree with you more about the tank sizes. My old Apollo, has 60 fresh, 30 grey and 30 black, my wife and I have stretched it out to 6 days without the need to dump, but still showering everyday, (we did drink bottled water). So I will probably install 160/80/80, or thereabouts, and have plenty of tank capacity without going over the top. We will see if I bend to peer pressure....... LOL. The only other problem is re-sale, trying to convince the prospective new owner that he doesn't really need the huge tanks. I will be installing the 3 tank system, not only for the reasons of ground dumping the grey where permitted, but for the convenience of flushing through of the sewer pipe, etc. I might even plumb the grey to be able to rinse the black tank if needed, by stacking the grey over the black and standing the larger capacity fresh by the side. Peter. |

hey mr jones i asked the same question about 6 months ago got the same good answers but i am going with the single tank to incorperate both the gray and black mainly for the reasons j maxwell gave dumping stations are not that far away and the installation is far simpler madbrit is also right on most of my overnighting and parking will at a park so the large capacity tanks dont make a lot of sence to me either i think that by having the grauy go into the black will prevent the solids from not rinsing out happy converting |

Just remember that under new Federal Laws it is illegal to dump raw waste water ( black or grey) anywhere in the U.S. Some folks here in Lee County, FL were fined just a few weeks ago. I guess the soap content is the main problem. Something to ponder, huh? Cheers...JJ |

Really? So are you saying that a new Federal law supercedes any local law and therefore it is illegal to dump grey water anywhere in the US on public or private land? |

Well, fed law has always superceded local laws and I suppose there is such a reg. on federal books. I think most states prohibit it also, although CA (of all places) has no such specific law. And, if they have such a law, most parks in the central part of the country or in arid parts ignore it. I can understand the need for it in Fl. Anyplace not super populated is swampy. Maybe they could use low suds detergent in Fl. |

Hmm, interesting. Yeah, in most of CA water is as precious as power and gold. I would think a little soap suds mixed with water is better for the grasss than nothing at all. O'Course the law makes perfect sense in the swamps of FL. If I had to speculate, local jurisdiction and enforcemnent (or lack thereof) probably outweighs any federal laws. |

Better call "Standing Indian campground" in western N. carolina, about 10 miles west of Franklin and let them know about the Federal Law............this is a Federal campground...was there last week.....they will instruct you to dump grey water on "the ground". by the way a great place to stay, and they honor the "Federal" golden age passport. I think the main consideration for installing tanks is room. In my Eagle I had all the room in the world and I used a single tank for the grey and black water. It worked out well in my Eagle. In my RTS I had to go with two tanks. It worked out to 40 Gallon grey and 60 black (with the shower water going into the black tank also). Also the two tanks are connected by a 1 1/2 gated pipe. I don't spend much time in campgrounds and I wish I had a larger water system in RTS, but that was all the room I could spare. In my Neoplan Spaceliner there is more room for tanks and I still had to go with two fresh and two grey/black water tanks since I wanted a larger system ( 360 Gallon fresh and 400 gallon grey/black). If the room is available I like to go with single tanks. It does make a easier installation and it worked really well in my Eagle. |

360 fresh and 400 grey/black? Holy cow, I have heard of some big capacities. . . but that is amazing! One could boondock all year on that! But potentially you have over six thousand pounds in water weight alone if you fill fresh before dumping. I thought the guys with 150-200 gallon tanks were big! I've got 92,85,32 - fresh, grey, black squeezed into my meager basement space of my Flxi transit. Scott |

Wow gotta lotta opinons we put in a 40 gal combo Grey/black there is a diverter valve just a small dump valve inline with all drains, shower, sinks and it goes around tank So when we get to campground we hook up our sewer hose.pull the diverter valve open close the other valve of same type going to grey/now making it a Black tank We're usally only gone on weekends and camprounds usally have full hookups however if not I put on of those Drain Caps with a water connector and run it under the bus somewhere to drain Grey water Works for Me Good Luck-----Carl |

Hey Guys, I gotta log in on this one: Does anyone know what the maximum volume of liquids allowed for RV/private coaches? It seems there would be a limit. I mean ,like what do the state troopers do w/a coach on its side and fuel, fresh water, gray water and black water, say a thousand gallons total, all headed for the local salmon spawning grounds? The question is rhetorical. I'm just curious as to where "the powers that be" draw the line. We have 140fw,65gry,65blk in our RTS. Tanks a lot, TonyW |
