T = Turbo A = Aftercooled The air that is compressed by the turbo gets cooled by the aftercooler before it goes into the engine. An aftercooler is kind of like a radiator for air... |

TA--6-71TA = turbocharged, 6-71TA tuned up yealds about 300HP, 8v71TA single turbo tuned to about 350HP 8v71. TA uses different pistons etc. |

"T" means turbocharged. "A" means aftercooled, which specifically means (I think) that there is a charged air cooler (probably water to air) below the roots type supercharger on a 2 stroke Detroit. If you have an turbocharged 2-stroke Detroit and have a radiator looking thing that sets in front of the water radiator that looks like a king sized AC condensor, then that is an Intercooler. The difference is that the intercooler air still has to go thru the supercharger via the blower bypass, where as an aftercooler by definition is after the blower. An intercooler would probably (but not always) be more efficient in a coach installation because of its air to air nature, where as a water to air aftercooler by design is not as efficient... ....reducing the temp (and density) of the charged air into the mill because it uses hot water as a "cooling" medium. An aftercooler is used when there are reasons not to use the better... ...intercooler, like space considerations, duty cycle, application, etc., etc.. Clear as mud, I realize. The best aftercoolers are the marine units that use very cold sea water as the cooling medium. Then they work very well. Whew! |

Henry's explanation would work for both, Two Dogs! |

Sorry for a big bo bo. Seems I saids that reducing the temp of the charged air REDUCES its density. It should have read increases the density, which is why Detroit (among others) went to all the ... ...trouble in the first place. I hate getting middle aged! He he he. |
