I'm looking to buy a GPS unit to go on my laptop.
The unit that I'm considering is the Delorme Earthmate 2004. These sell new for about $120 or so- Anyone have experience with this unit?
Thanks

I've been very happy with mine and have felt it was well worth the investment. I enjoy being able to find an address using the detailed map AND being able to know WHERE I am on the map. It isn't perfect but works for me.

I have had experience with all 3 of Delorme GPSs. Each is an improvement. The latest, with USB port connection allows use of Microsoft Street and Trips as a mapping and GPS tracking program. Microsoft is a more inherently logical program, but while traveling, I still like the Delorme software to use with GPS tracking.

After you use a GPS, you will not know how you got along without it. For instance, easy to input Walmart addresses. MS Streets and Trips easily locates campgrounds when needed. And, it identifies streets that you circle around so you don't have to unhook and back-up.

The mapping programs are good, but not perfect. In Peoria, IL., we took a wrong turn. My wife directed me down a road that turned from 2 lane blacktop to 2 lane gravel, then 1 lane. The road that was suppose to be there was not. Unhooked and backed-up 1/4 mile.

Hi Chuck,
I use the new USB one and it works very well. I saw it and the CD for $103 inc. shipping on an auction site.

I've been using DeLorme Street Atlas, MapnGo and the original GPS receiver since about 1995. Great system. You'll discover many benefits - trip planning, enroute navigation, finding addresses and how to get there, Interstate exit services info., locations of hospitals, restaurants, zip codes, etc.
Mostly, I use Street Atlas but MapnGo is useful for locating RV parks with info on facilities and rates.
There are occasional errors regarding street and address locations but nothing serious. I've checked some errors and found the same ones on Map Quest and a couple other CD ROM map programs.
In my opinion, DeLorme gives the most bang for the buck.

I'm using the Earthmate 2004. So far, so good. If you do purchase it, connect to the Internet and do the updates. There's a bug that won't let you look up addresses for certain zip codes. The patch corrects this problem.

Just purchased CoPilot Live Laptop 7 a few weeks ago....have used it in all terrain and it is dead on. Even talks to you.....and answers. :)

Not saying there's nothing better out there, since this is our first. But we are very well pleased.

One trouble I had was heading to I think it was the Merritt Parkway in Mass, and the overhead bridge height was not high enough for my 11'-3" coach. Yes, there was a sign notifying to under height bridges, but I still had to back out the entrance ramp to get back on I-91.

Another situation I encountered in PA was finding my way to get to an onramp for I-81 and had to cross an overpass going over the interstate and to my dismay the posted weight limit was 10 ton and I am about 11.5 ton.

It’s easy to get caught on a residential street and find the road has a weight limit on it.

Question: Is there a Truckers Route version or some such program which can alert heavy operators of potentially impassable roads? I guess there are paper atlases for truckers with such info, but has anyone come out with something for the computer atlases?

Timnvt,

I understand that in California, Cal-Trans has an 800 # for oversize loads, they have the data, now if only services like Delorme would compile the info that could be downloaded like DUATS for aircraft.

We use a regular handheld GPS with DeLorme and Streets and Trips. I understood the Earthmate to be limited to use with the mapping software.

When we want a GPS away from our coach, such as for hiking or cycling, we just unhook the GPS and run it on its batteries.

If your stand alone GPS puts out the right sentence, the mapping software can read it with no problem. In fact, one way we use it is to have it displaying a screen for the driver, while the copilot looks at a different presentation on the notebook.

Enjoy!
