Hi It is really straight forward. All you need is a lot of strength. The engine and tranny weigh about 4000 lbs. A good strong engine lift is really useful. I use a one arm type of crane that I can lift up to 5000 lbs with. You will need about 2 weeks from start to finish if you have everything and are doing a straight swap. If you are doing a rebuild it will take a lot longer as you don't know just what will be needed till you tear apart the old one. Start by blocking the engine cradle with strong blocks of wood or make a steel support and put it under the engine with the suspension lowered then when you have it supported raise the bus by filling up the suspension with air after you have undone the cradle bolts and anything else that holds the engine in place. Once you have it raised roll the bus ahead by putting a 6' bar on your wheel wrench or pry under the wheel with a pry bar till you roll the bus clear of the engine assembly. It is a lot of work but I have done it. If you are going to rebuild your own make sure you have the service manual for the 71 series. DO NOT GO UNDER THE BUS WITHOUT BLOCKING IT IN CASE YOU BLOW AN AIR BAG OR LINE. Hope this helps you understand what you are facing. Bill |

When they pulled the 8v71 from my mci 9, they used a large forklift and a chain. Unbolt the engine, disconnect the U joint, drive the forklift up so that the two rails of the forklift are touching the engine cradle mounting bars, and attach a chain from the forklift to the engine. Pull the engine out a little, repositin the chain, pull the engine out more. After several of these 8" or so moves, the engine is positioned on the forklift. |
